As sad as it is, I seem to recall from earlier consultation on this plan (it's been mooted and mostly public for around a year) that the main building at least will survive.

I don't think that there is any doubt that this stretch of Folkestone desperately needs attention. The walk down from Central isn't great, and certainly isn't pedestrian friendly, and the sooner the one-way system around Middelburg Square gets ditched the better. Sadly, of course, banning cars from that area will be impossible thanks to the Bouverie Place car park...

Ironically, Folkestone's bus provision is surprisingly good (and surprisingly well-used, too), and I only hope that FHDC is paying attention to that...

Some folk may remember how Bouverie Square was before the bus station was built in 1955…

I can just about recall bus stops round the edge of the square. On one occasion we had been to visit my aunt in Cheriton and in the evening caught a 99 to Folkestone, which then fortuitously became a 90 to Dover, meaning that we didn't need to get off the bus!

I remember it well.  I had family holidays in Hythe over several summers in the 50’s.  My Dad did not have a car at that time and we travelled down from Maidstone on the 10 with our suitcases under the stairs and walked to the guest house from Red Lion Square.  Always went into Folkestone for coffee and eclairs in Bobbys and I well recall 1955 when we arrived in the bus station it was, indeed, a bus station instead of buses parked round the perimeter!  I recall my Dad taking photos (I was about 8 or 9 at the time) of the new look.   No idea what happened to those.  My favourite vehicles of that time for the many journies we took between Hythe and Folkestone and in the other direction to New Romney were the CJG PD1’s.  Ah memories!
