Does this group’s remit include Sargents of East Grinstead? If so, can anyone confirm whether they owned UA 6581, a 1929 Star Flyer / Dutson, and if possible provide dates? Has anyone ever published a fleet list for them?

Hi Michael

To each of your questions, the answer is yes.

I wrote an article on Sargents that was published in issue 19 of the Southdown Enthusiasts Club Miscellany publication in March 1997 (I haven't checked recently but you may find copies of no.19 are still available from the SEC stand at rallies within Sussex, or otherwise by post), and this included a full fleet history as far as was then known.  UA 6581 was operated from 7/36 to ?/39, and your reference to "Dutson" bodywork (Dodson perhaps?) is new as I had not traced this.  The vehicle came from Burwell & District, possibly via another untraced operator.

This group's remit includes any operator whose services M&D (or East Kent) acquired either directly or (as in this case) indirectly, since it was Southdown that initially operated them (unnumbered) before M&D assumed operation of those to the east of East Grinstead from 30 September 1951.  At first they were operated using M&D vehicles outstationed at Southdown's East Grinstead garage (in Cantelupe Road), until M&D opened their own garage in Edenbridge in 1955.

Still available according to the web-site - I'm about to order - thanks for info.

If I remember rightly the Sargent's' depot backed on to the Southdown one, which after acquisition was extended back into that site.

Thanks very much, Derek, that’s very helpful. I have a photo of the vehicle from the OS, blinded East Grinstead and probably taken in the town, but no indication of ownership. Like Eric, I shall definitely be ordering a copy of the SEC publication.

The reference to Dutson bodywork comes from PSVC publication MM4 (AJS, Star, and Sunbeam chassis list).
