With all this mention of Dumpton in various posts recently, it reminded me of the above which I did some time around the year 2000 on a VR. Clearly this route no longer exists, but can anyone remember when it ceased, and where it actually went to/from Dumpton Market, and perhaps when it actually started? The route number was 67.

I've finally had a moment to look through the Kent County Council guides that were produced around this time. The 67, operated by Stagecoach East Kent, provided four journeys in each direction between Newington (Quetta Road), Newington Estate Centre, Ramsgate and Dumpton Market. Fridays only, outbound at 0900.0930.1000.1030, return at 1100.1130.1200.1230. It's the same timetable in the April 96, September 96, April 97, July 98 and November 98 issues, but it has disappeared from the May 99 issue. It may have started earlier, but those are buried deeper.

Eastonways also operated a service in the April 96 edition, numbered M1, which operated from King Street (Iceland) and the market (departing from Montefiore Avenue, Side Entrance) every 20 minutes from 0810 to 1530 (returning 10 minutes later).

Hope that helps!
Chris

Many thanks for this. I think I did one of the trips from the market, after spending a bit of time in there after arriving in good time for the said trip. Certainly a big market, I presume it still exists?

I guess several will respond to your question here. It’s a long-gone feature of Ramsgate, although a smaller one does occasionally appear in central Ramsgate. The site of the Market is now the Ramsgate Garden Centre (previously known as Wyevale), and the site used for the buses and coaches that attended, the front of Dumpton Park station, has now been “converted” into a housing development.

Thanks Dave. I remember it being a fairly large market, so am surprised that it's no more.

Going off thread slightly. Didn't the market appear in one of the best episodes of Only Fools?
