Hello Group, here are my notes on Face to Face in a Cyber Environment
and Discussion Notes Pad. I am sorry I cannot join the group meeting
tonight, my Dad passed away last night and I am leaving Saskatoon this
morning to be with my family. If you could record the meeting that
would be great.
Notes on Affordance 6 Face to Face in a Cyber Environment
• Experience the social feelings that are created by visually seeing
and hearing the instructor and classmates as well as the ability to
contribute to the discussion.
• Invite guest speakers and subject matter experts from anywhere in
the world to present information.
• Collaborate with classmates and peers to complete assignments and
participate in research projects.
• According to Adobe the number of video conference participants is
unlimited.
• Video conference access is managed by the host.
• According to Danny Maas transactional distance vs physical distance
presents a challenge for instructors who use video conference. As a
result, instructors must work harder to keep the audience engaged
using tools such as the document camera, shared whiteboard, data in
the form of graphs and charts and PowerPoint slides.
• Because student engagement is different than in a face-to-face
environment, the engagement strategies must be planned.
• Teachers may be managing several sites at one time with different
audiences who have different needs and may have different timetables.
• Managing the video conference begins with deciding how you are going
to interact with the audience, then developing the ground rules or
code of conduct and making it known to the participants.
• Develop strategies and techniques for managing delays with the audio
or video and ways to avoid participants talking over each other by
using the mute on the microphone setting.
• The teacher must manage the distribution of learning resources by
using e-mail and shared whiteboard.
• Face to face in a cyber environment students can see the instructor
facial expression during the
live class. There is an added benefit when student can see facial
gestures.
• Live camera feed requires additional band width and can slow the
communication down for student will basic internet.
Affordance 8 Discussion Notes Pad
• Are rich text enabled and can change both font and colour, notes can
be saved as an rtf. file or e-mailed.
• Writing the agenda on the notes pad may assist with staying on task.
• The instructor can layout their course objectives for the session.
• This is a static pod and requires screen space to display. This
information can be provided as an attachment to save screen space.
• Placing instructions in a notes pad instructing learners how to
prepare for the meeting.
