Last year was the first I had heard about the Maurice River Cruises to see the Purple Martins gathering along the Maurice River. This year I booked a trip and thought others might be interested. John,  That looks great.  Have you heard whether they hug the coast, or go offshore?     Jim

Jim -

I assume you mean after they leave the marshes at Mauricetown.  My understanding is that they follow the coastal marshes heading south. This site has some additional info about tracking of their migration routes/activity:

The event at Mauricetown is the daily congregation at the roost site in the marsh along the Maurice River.  Each evening the birds come from all directions in great numbers with the whole group swirling above the marsh for 15-20 minutes before settling into the marsh to roost just after sunset.  I have not tried to catch the morning dispersal but I assume that is not as spectacular as the birds just head out for the day incrementally. 

I was on the river Sunday night we also saw two peregrine falcons and a bald eagle fishing in the river while we waited for the martins show!

It's interesting - the route maps they show are both well inland - I assume the ones on the marshes have not been banded.   It will give us all reason to look skyward.  I have not had success with Martin houses, the Starlings simply mob them just as the scouts are passing overhead.   Thanks again.
