A pair seen this afternoon (1730) at the Boonsboro WWTP Washington county.

Two photos seem to show a dark neck on one of the pair, but that's likely a shadow effect.

The consensus (3 to 0) is in...a pair of male Wood Ducks in eclipse plumage with key feature being the pattern of white on the neck...refer to Peterson's 4th edition p. 51, or Robbins' et al. 1983 rev edition Golden Guide p. 52 (not illustrated in Sibley's Eastern Guide 1st edition).

I had hoped to get a better photo today, but only found a pair of Mallards (I think).

I thought of a Wood Duck as soon as I saw the white pattern on the head of one.  But, the shape of the bill/head doesn't look right in the pictures.  The pictures make the bill+head look almost Eiderish.  But, nothing much else about those ducks looks Eiderish.

A better picture of a head in profile would be really helpful.

The birds were at the extreme distance for my equipment

Canon PowerShot SX730 HS

which leads to image anomalies that you can't trust such as the bill shape.

Likely they have gone...

Looks like it might have Egyptian goose genes, among others? Egyptian x Greylag? Looking at tiny pictures on my phone...
