I have gotten a few emails and texts about access to the Eastern Sanitary Landfill in Baltimore County recently and just wanted to make sure the rules and everything were known. It is very similar to the Cecil County Landfill, if anyone has ever birded there. The landfill is open MONDAY - SATURDAY 7:30 - 3:30. When you pull into the landfill you will see a couple of trailers to the right of the weigh station. The Trailer with the red roof is the office and you must stop in here and sign in. A reflective safety vest and hard hat are required and please bring them with you as they won't always be able to supply them for you. PLEASE STAY ON THE UPPER ROAD OF THE LANDFILL as the truck traffic is much less up there and is out of the way. If you have any further questions or concerns please email me. This is by far the best available spot in Baltimore County for gulls and as long as the rules are known and followed, this should continue to be a great asset to all of us.

Just wanted to clear a few things up about the landfill. I was incorrect about the office building having a red roof. It has a red walkway leading up to the doors, incase that has caused any confusion. Also, the spot to scope is from the upper road above the landfill. To be extra clear, this road is South West of the landfill itself. To get to this spot, follow the signs that point to the landfill and you will see a road to your left that goes up the hill. Take this road until you can see the gulls. PLEASE SCOPE FROM THE ROAD AND STAY BY YOUR CAR. Although I wish there was a way to get closer to the birds, there is not. I have already been notified by landfill management that the influx of birders has been noticed, and will become a problem if we can't all stick to the rules. Again, this is a great spot in general and the only consistently good Gull spot in Baltimore. As long as everyone can abide by these few rules we should continue to be allowed access here for a long time to come. If anyone still has any additional questions or needs something clarified, please email me.
