After getting some additional info from Marcy (thanks!), yesterday (April 2)
I went to Oxbow Lake for the first time. From the north end of the
Primitive Trail where it goes down to lake side level, I counted 24 Wilson's
Snipe foraging along the eastern side of Gallinule Point. Here is one image
that includes 9. This is a very large "Pano Style" image. You may not want
to view this from your phone.

Some beautiful light on the water just after dawn... While I was surveying
those 24, a distinctly separate flock of 35 flew to the back wide (western)
of Gallinule Point:

As Marcy suggested in a recent post or eBird report, the more you look the
more you see :-). I'm still studying a couple of hundred survey images to
see if I can add to my 24 count, but at this point it stands at 59. I
started around 7:15am. By 9:30 or so they were getting scarce and when I
left at 11:15 am I did not see any, nor did I see them fly out because I was
down at the southern end of the lake.

Also got some images of 4 Caspian Terns, and 20 Blue-winged Teal in flight,
among other things. And a curious Raccoon in the marsh.

Thanks again Marcy, for keeping us up to date on the Sniping!

I think you are correct, Matt!  (??).  Check these out:

Those images were 1 step from the trash bin because the out of camera was fairly badly overexposed.  I hadn’t studied them in detail and haven’t even gone through the 600 odd images properly that I shot yesterday.  Because they were a bit overexposed the whitish feathers may be color shifted.  Good catch!

Hey Neil,

Do you have any more photos of the male Green-winged Teal facing away in the center of this photo?

That broad white horizontal stripe sure looks like a Common (Eurasian Green-winged) Teal to me!

Matt

Be sure to check those pictures of flying snipe for Common Snipe - can only tell difference when caught in flight!

Also, if you get any good other pictures of Green-winged Teal (Eurasian) please post - need to ensure we are not looking at a possible hybrid!

Great shots - glad you enjoyed your visit to Oxbow!
