I believe it was named for C. Hart Merriam, a prominent Mammalogist, biologist, etc (for whom Dipodomys merriami - a species of kangaroo rat - was named)

Jim,

This is a quote from the History of Patuxent: America’s Wildlife Research Center:

Dr. Leland C. Morley was superintendent of the refuge during the embryonic years from 1938 to 1948. He was responsible for the construction and development of the facilities to be used for wildlife research (Morley, 1948). Under his administration, three major buildings (Merriam, Henshaw, and Nelson Laboratories), named for the first three chiefs of the Bureau of Biological Survey, were constructed in 1939-41 through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration and the Public Works Administration headquartered in Washington, D.C.

You may also be interested in this detailed description of the construction of the buildings at the research center: https://docslib.org/doc/1406404/early-history-of-patuxent-wildlife-research-center-circa-1948-by-dr This document was written about 1948 or 1949 by Dr. Leland Morley, who was the Superintendent of the Refuge.

FYI, the  former name Patuxent Wildlife Research Center  (PWRC) is no longer in use. The research facility is now one of three locations of the Eastern Ecological Science Center (EESC)  operated by USGS. The National Wildlife Refuge where EESC is located is still known as Patuxent Research Refuge. Confusing, I know. Here’s another way to put it: Patuxent Research Refuge is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, operated by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. There are three tracts at the Refuge: North and South, both open to the public, and Central Tract, closed to the public. EESC occupies the Central Tract of Patuxent Research Refuge; EESC is operated by the US Geological Survey and was formerly known as PWRC. See https://friendsofpatuxent.org/sys/website/?pageId=18145 for more about the names and administration of the Refuge and research center over the years.

Thanks for all the responses. The WAPO's John Kelly recently wrote an article about Florence Merriam Bailey - see screenshot for title and date - and I wondered if Merriam lab might have been named for her. I'll pass the info on to him...

Hey Jim:

I guess you saw or figured out that Florence was the sister of C. Hart ...
