Recommendations for a Windows OS?

Probably an on-list reply as would likely be of interest to others...

I use Audacity for my audio editing – available for Windows, Mac, Linux and source code available. It’s free.

Cautionary note. There have been several recent changes to the user agreements that led users to think that the new management was glomming on to user data and may use it for other purposes, and a lot of back-pedalling on the part of the management. I’m not using one of the later versions, so not under the new TOS.

Hi All,

There’s a fantastic audio editor program called “Ocen Audio” made by academics in Brazil. It’s totally free, and highly recommended by the folks at Cornell / Macaulay Library.

It’s been the only audio software I’ve used in the last 2 years, since I found it. It’s really terrific, and available for Mac, Windows, Linux. You can view spectrograms of the audio (frequency over time), not just waveforms (loudness over time), and the learning curve is very much easier than Audacity.

Happy recording, bird people!

Hi again,

I was remiss in not mentioning that Cornell has a simple tutorial for getting started in Ocen Audio, with the aim of improving audio clips for eBird upload to Macaulay Library. Even if you don’t upload clips to eBird, this will really help you get off & running with the software.

Best regards,

I'd agree with Jon re: Audacity. Great product and easy to use.
