MD Birders:

I just got off the phone with a former UK and Hong Kong birder who
recently moved to Baltimore.

He had a juvenile Heerman's Gull at Baltimore Harbor yesterday and
again today, twice: once at 11 and again from 12-30 to 1pm.

He took lots of close photos.

He originally thought it was a jaeger since he did not expect a
Heerman's on the East Coast.

It is a juvenile, dark and unmarked with some barring on the tail.

It was feeding with Ringed-billed Gulls.

The location is near the Mecca Open Air Pavillion and the lighthouse.
Near the Four Seasons and another hotel. I believe this is at Pier 5?
He had it sitting in the water.

He just forwarded me a couple photos and I have shared them with Matt
Hafner. Looks good !!!

The observer is a bird painter and has painted birds for some bird books.

Good luck!

Phil

Tyler Bell and I arrived just before 8 a.m. Saturday, April 2, to metered street parking and a quick walk past the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse and on to the "canal" (narrow water body between Piers 4 and 5) where the Coast Guard ship is docked to find the juvenile Heerman's Gull swirling around with the other local gulls. At one point, it flew 5' over our heads before flying toward the Pratt Street end of the "canal". As we made our way toward to it, we found other birders looking at it as it perched on a street light, then it flew down into the water and up on bollards. Other birders later reported that it had moved to a dock at the marina (at the southwest corner of the waterfront at the end of President Street in Little Italy), requiring a scope for views.

Hi, Jane.

It's here now on the far dock across from the JH Business school, loafing with ring bills near a picnic table. I've been here about 30 minutes waiting for it to do something. If you wouldn't mind passing along the info, that would be great!
