Since moving to Somerset County ten years ago, we've been amused by the "commuter" Green Herons who fly downstream every morning while we're having breakfast, and then return every evening, flying back upstream while we're having dinner. At first we had only one or two, then four, then six, then eight. This year our high count was twelve, but tonight we were astonished to count 21 of them! They fly singly or in groups of 2-4, presumably heading for a communal roost, over about a 20-minute period, just before sunset. Amazing!
