Hi MD/DC Birders:

I cross posted the following to Birdchat. It got a lot of buzz, so I thought I'd share it with you guys, too ...

=================================================

This is a one-time, extralimital message cross-post (see below), which I believe is OK under current guidelines; however, I think follow-up posts are not within etiquette.

I thought this was pretty interesting and I'm taking the opportunity to share it with the group.

Highlights of this message:

1. Notice of second record of Bald Eagle to Japan, and

2. A really cool photo of three Haliaeetus eagles together: Bald Eagle (L), a Steller's Sea-Eagle (R), and a White-tailed Eagle (C), all in one tree.

Thanks to Hiraoka Takashi.

Enjoy!

Phil

Subject: [OB] A Bald Eagle straggled to Japan

Dear Oriental birders and ornithologists,

Greetings from Japan. A Bald Eagle was observed and photographed on 27 January in Notsuke, eastern Hokkaido, Japan.

This is the second record of this species from Japan, the first having been recorded in Kunashiri Island back in 2001 by Russian ornithologists.

Please have a look at the impressive shot in which three species Haliaeetus eagles are perched on one tree.

In the following picture the Bald Eagle shows some dark smudges on the head and the tail tip and some white feathers on the underwing as it flies.

The above shown pages are on the website of Mainichi Shimbun Newspaper.

I hope this information and the pictures prove interesting to you.

Best wishes,
