to Maryland & DC Birding
Hi all,
I just saw an eBird report from Selden Island, on the Potomac. Does anyone know anything about it as a birding spot? Is it publicly accessible? Thanks!

Manoli: Selden Island is private, and is owned by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As far as I know, it is strictly out of bounds to people, including birders, who do not have official business with the Institute. The island lies entirely in Montgomery County by virtue of the fact the state of Maryland "owns" the river up to the Virginia shoreline in Loudoun County. The only vehicular access is via a private road and bridge from the Ashburn area, off VA Route 7. An interesting series of photos of this area can be found on the Flickr site at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/137150639@N03/24625821229/in/datetaken/
Maryland birders who want to sample the birdlife of Loudoun County, Virginia, right across the Potomac from the familiar areas along the C&O Canal upstream of Riley's Lock should consider a visit to Algonkian Regional Park. It's a big and busy park with a popular golf course, but the trails along the river are delightful. Lots of Warbling Vireos the other day.
