I wonder if we have any chimney swift experts in this group. I live in DC near the Washington Cathedral and have been following chimney swifts entering a particular chimney near where I live. Since September 19, I’ve been trying to observe the swifts every night and have collected data on when they first go into the chimney when the last one goes into the chimney and the number that I can count going into the chimney. The data is quite interesting and I would like to discuss it with somebody who knows a lot more than I do about chimney swifts. I’d be very grateful for any help.

I'm not a swift expert but I live near there and would love to be in this loop. Cheers! Sarah

I believe anyone has access to the All About Birds site, but that may be incorrect.

Here's their information about Chimney Swifts:

Regarding the field data mentioned, Swifts will vary their entry times to roosting sites depending on light levels. On cloudy evenings they will enter sooner, on clear evenings they will enter later. So from day to day the entry to roosts will vary.

What determines the order of entry to roost sites is a puzzle. Do the males enter first, followed by the females, or vice versa. Or is it age specific rather than sex specific in regards to roost entry? We may never know.

Birds of the World is free to everyone this weekend but normally requires a subscription.

The Kyles have some excellent resources (https://marylandbirds.org/chimney-swifts) and the Natural History Society of MD has an active swift project (https://www.marylandnature.org/get-involved/events/event/chimney-swift-night-out-2/).  There's a nice video by Chris Eberly on the latter site.

Dear MD Birders,

Thank you all for a ton of information that will be very helpful to me. I was put in contact with you by Dave R. I'm in touch with Alice, and have heard from Sarah, Marcia, James, Maria, Cass & Rick. Aren't birders the greatest? When I've followed all your leads, I hope to get back to you with a summary of what I could find out.

I now understand that MD Birding is related to MOS. Many years ago, when I was a beginner, I had the privilege of being on a Christmas bird count with Chandler Robbins & an NIH colleague that some of you may have known, the late & wonderful Harvey Mudd.

Rewarding birding to all,

Lee

Dear Birders,

Alas, last night there were only 8 swifts entering the chimney so I think the season is over till next year. Glad to have had all the suggestions from you. I've been in contact with Alice Nelson in B'more who has been doing these surveys for many years & she is graciously helping me.
