Hi Everyone,
Can you make a #GivingTuesday donation to Maryland Biodiversity Project and help us build on the amazing momentum we created together in 2021? Just click "Donate" in the top-right of nearly any MBP page:
We were delighted to see all our ambitious plans for 2021 come together so well. We kicked off the highly successful Turkey Point Bird Count, which will greatly enhance our understanding of eastern U.S. bird migration. We highlighted the connection between birds and the biodiversity that drives and fuels their epic migrations. We conducted dozens of nocturnal insect surveys in promising areas with limited coverage, collecting valuable data and many new and noteworthy state records. We refined our game-changing integration with iNaturalist and dramatically increased our data ingest efficiency. We continued biodiversity-focused outreach via daily social media posts as well as in-person and on-line presentations.
MBP reached the impressive milestone of 20,000 taxa cataloged and then continued at a sprint to report 20,127 taxa today - wait, 20,128 taxa hours later. We are still adding multiple new species per week. We now have photo documentation of over 12,000 Maryland species and we are rapidly closing in on a million records permanently and securely archived. And of course we work to interpret this data for maximum value and impact to science, conservation, and education. Much of this is via the MBP website, which we continue to improve, bolstered by the exciting addition of help from new team members Jacqueline and Emma. This year we made key improvements to increase the site's stability and long-term maintainability. Finally, we added several major features like our special project pages, new MBP blog, and the just-released seasonality charts. And those are just some of the headlines!
We have even bigger plans for 2022, which will be the 10-year anniversary of Maryland Biodiversity Project! We want next year to be a year-long celebration of biodiversity, and we'll begin announcing some of our big plans soon. Thanks to all of you for making this project and community far bigger and more impactful than we dreamed possible in the early years. If you're in a position to make a Giving Tuesday donation to ensure 2022 is our most exciting and productive year yet, we'd so appreciate your support. It's a critically important time for our planet and the biodiversity on which we all depend. With your help we can keep building on our successes and do more good.
