Hi Everyone,
MBP is excited to move more deliberately into targeted data collection to address gaps in the state's biodiversity data. Here's a project page that introduces our 2021 focus on nocturnal insect surveys in areas with limited available insect data:
https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/project/snis/
This augmenting of MBP insect records will help shine a brighter light on insect diversity and insect biomass, both of which are important for a healthy planet. We hope to drive efforts to reduce loss of biodiversity and to promote healthy ecosystems. This survey work complements the upcoming Turkey Point Bird Count and the relationship between bird migration and healthy insect populations and diversity.
For those of you passionate about these topics and in a position to support, we'd greatly appreciate any donations or sponsorship of 2021 efforts. There's a "Donate" button on the project page and in the top-right corner of nearly all MBP pages. Any donations or sponsorship right now are especially valuable. We hope to expand on these targeted data collection efforts in future years, and we also have more web development support available than usual. We're working to accelerate feature development such as seasonality charts, filtering by record tag (blooming, adult, larva - so caterpillar filters for Lepidoptera, plant phenology, etc.), more mobile-friendly design, and much more. Thanks for considering!
It's July 16th and so far this month, MBP has added 13 new species (to 19,910, nearly to 20,000!), 306 new MBP county records, and 1,610 new USGS quad records. We've already permanently archived nearly 10,000 images this month. (!!!)
I'll end with the exciting update that the Turkey Point Bird Count kicks off in just over 2 weeks. We are delighted to announce that Maryland's own Daniel Irons will be our counter, so it's going to be an amazing first season up there. (

Thanks to everyone for the support. We're doing more than ever and it's the right time to be doing it!
Have a lovely weekend,
Bill and the MBP team
