MCDee bought a bunch of RR's from a franchise and has been running
them. They plan to change them over. [In effect, they bought the
locations...]
But this is FAR from all the Roy's, from what I heard.

To the best of my knowledge, the chain was sold to McDonalds who is rapidly
changing them all over to McDonalds, except where it was impossible, ie, the
Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue Roy Rogers was next door to an existing
McDonalds, so that one became a Chevy Chase Bank branch instead.

I don't know if the chain is Kaput, but a Roy's on Rte. 198 just off the
BW Parkway towards Laurel closed and became (I think) a MacDonald's.

Most of the DC area Roy Rogers restaurants were sold to McDonalds and will
either be converted to Mickey Dees or sold (presumably to some
noncompetitive enterprise). But there were a few local franchisees who held
out, last I heard. For instance, I believe that the chain of RR restaurants
owned by Pete Plamondon are still around, though most of these are in
outlying areas, like Frederick (where there are two -- and they still have
salad bars!).
Anybody know how far the Roy Rogers chain spread out of the Washington area
before it was purchased (from Marriott) by Hardees back in the early 1990s?

There are still a few Roy Rogers outlets in Baltimore that are still
operating. There is a location on Pulaski Highway (U.S. Route 40) in
Rosedale just south of the Baltimore Beltway and an especially good Roy's
(the Roast Beef sandwiches are always hot and fresh) at the intersection of
East Joppa Road and Perring Parkway in Towson/Parkville. I recently went to
the Roy's on Route 1 in College Park and it was awful.
I'll always remember the day that the Roy's on Belair Road in Fullerton
closed. There was always a U.S. flag flying in front of the restaurant and
on the last day it was operating, the employees left the flag flying at
half-mast. The best Fast-Food chain had closed one of its best outlets. The
employees were right - something good had died.
The knocked down the restaurant and replaced it with a pre-fab McDonald's.

Flags on land fly at "half staff" - MASTS are only on BOATS.
I this discussion arose fron when Hardees bought the chain many moons
ago.
In the Phila area, Boston Market bought up the local franchises a few
years ago. And one of the remaining ones has recently changed its
name to just "Roy's" -- I'm not sure what that's all about.
Too bad. There's just no fast-food fried chicken to compare. KFC
need not apply.

"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice, and moderation in pursuit
of justice is no virtue."
The Roy's chain has been sold twice since Marriott owned it. The first time
was circa 1991, when Hardee's bought it and converted, as far as I know, all
of the outlets that they'd bought to their own brand name. (Some franchisees
held out and not only didn't sell to Hardee's, but maintained the original
brand name.) After a year or two, Hardee's realized they'd made a major
mistake. Roy's was a more popular brand name, at least in the Washington
region, than Hardee's was and sales at some outlets plummeted by as much as
90%. So, circa 1993, they converted most of them back to Roy Rogers, but
sales never recovered.
Last year, McDonald's bought the chain from Hardees. McDonald's regards
itself as underrepresented in the DC area (which is -- or was until a few
weeks ago -- true up here in Gaithersburg). They intended to convert all of
the Roy's outlets to _something_, mostly to Mickey Dees. The fate of the
non-Hardee's RRs is more nebulous. I don't know how many, if any, of these
McD's bought. But I assume that Roy Roger's restaurants will survive in at
least some areas. Changing the name to "Roy's" may be a response to RR's
death -- those pictures on the wall will need black frames -- but this seems
like an overreaction (or it may represent a local sale to some other
enterprise that didn't buy rights to the full name).

The name change predated his death.
Of course, It's sort of karmic that Roy kicked off at about
the same time most of the chain is closing up.

There were plenty up in the Baltimore and Baltimore suburbs.
Also the Marriott operated rest areas on the NJ turnpike and
even a couple of outlets inside the Newark airport remained
Roy Rogers after the sale of the rest to Hardees.
Used to be much better.

That would explain how it tasted.

The Roy's on Connecticut Avenue in NW DC (recently closed) is slated to
become a McDonalds. Much larger site than the McDonalds two blocks north.

How many do you want?
There were McDonald's on Bureau Drive, across 355 from Lakeforest Mall,
and in the Orchard Valley Shopping Center (a block from Quince Orchard
High School).
Now, if you get picky on me and say that this third one is actually across
the street (Darnstown Road) from the City of Gaithersburg, then I'll
answer back that the Roy's -> McDonald conversion underway in Montgomery
Village Center isn't in Gaithersburg at all!
- Jonathan
P.S. -- Don't forget the one off of Great Senaca Highway, just north of
the State Park.
Hey, you can never have enough McDonalds! (Juuuust kidding!)
I live next to Lake Whetstone in Montgomery Village. The only McDonald's
easily accessible from here has been for some years the one over on 355 in
the shopping center with Borders, across the street from Lake Forest Mall.
And it's generally overcrowded, with long lines and a surfeit of screaming
kids (and I won't even mention what a pain it is to get into that parking
lot from Montgomery Village Avenue). The one at the Orchard Valley Shopping
Center is too far away for "fast" food (though I'd make the drive for a
really good Hunan place :). There's also one down around the Airpark, but I
keep forgetting it's there. And it's still a bit too far.
Next time I have a Big Mac Attack, though, I'm heading for the one at the
Montgomery Village Center! (Hmm, wonder if it's finished yet? I'd hate to
end up dining on sawdust and particle board.)
Chris
p.s. Yes, I'm using the name Gaithersburg loosely!

It's my understanding that the independently owned locations are going to
remain open. There's still a great one down in Springfield on Backlick Road.
I think there's still one (of the original two) open in Tysons Corner as well.
The day they turned them all into Hardee's was the beginning of the end, IMO.

Briggman, I will ask again and again until you give
a public response for the internet community to see.
When are you going to pay the restitution for stealing?
You accepted goods from dealers and paid with bad checks.
The restitution has been ordered by the Virginia courts
as a result of your guilty pleas to numerous crimes.
According to the Virginia court records, the victims
have yet to be compensated for your crimes.
...and Briggman, I asked a question from someone in your
area and received this response:
[David Briggman is not a Virginia police officer.]

There's a Roys in Tysons Corner on Rt. 7 near the mall ... saw it today.
My wife says there is also one in South Lakes plaza in Reston.
The manager says the one on Route 7 is probably going to be open until the
end of this year. Then, I think it gets converted into McDonald's.
Joanna
The Roy's IN Tyson's Corner Center just closed, and it apparently won't
be turning into a McD's. I don't think McDonald's likes having outlets in
enclosed malls for some reason. (None in Fair Oaks, Tysons, or Springfield
anyway).
Then why did they replace the Roy Rogers in Laurel (Maryland) Mall with a
McDonalds and why are they opening a McDonalds in Wheaton (Maryland) Plaza,
both of which are enclosed malls?
