I used to live up in North Jersey and the best way (for me) was to go 'up'
through PA on the NorthEast Extension of the Turnpike and then 'over' into New
Jersey. NJ's a big place so that might not work for you.

You also might want to give some details more specific than state-level if you
want short-cuts or directions.

I travelled I95 from SC to NJ on Easter Weekend and didn't notice
any deluge of traffic. In fact, the road was largely barren most
of the way (in fact, the only problems I experienced traffic wise
were in MD - around Baltimore... ;)

If you are going from the DC area, take US 50 east over the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge to US 301 north. Then, in Delaware, turn right on DE 299, and then
left at US 13 north. Take US 13 up to I-295, and go north (don't take DE 1
to I-95, then you have to go through the 95/295/495 interchange), and then
I-295 over the Delaware Memorial Bridge to either 295 or NJTP in NJ.

if youre anywhere from Frederick west, go up to Harrisburg (on I-81 or
US 15) and take 81 to I-78 east. Much quicker route from Hagerstown,
MD to NYC than going through Baltimore is. Plus, there isnt much
traffic at all.

I've been driving between DC and NJ regularly for the last 12 years.
The best alternative route (light traffic and no tolls) in my opinion
is to take 83 north from the Baltimore Beltway (695) up to Harrisburg PA
and then take 81 east to 78 east and that will take you right into the middle of
New Jersey.

It might add 30-45 minutes more to your trip than if you went right up 95 but I
find the traffic is pretty light and you save about $10.00 in tolls. It's also
a very scenic route, not like the boring ride up 95. I've never been
backed up in traffic once during all the years I've taken this route.

Doesn't that route add almost 75 miles to the trip?

Yea, It's definitely longer, I don't think 75 miles though, maybe more
like 40-50. The original poster said they wanted to avoid traffic as much
as possible but didn't say anything about saving time or milage. If they
are starting from above or west of Baltimore this won't be an issue.

Once a few years ago I decided to drive to NJ during the Memorial day
weekend. On the way back to DC I sat in traffic for almost an hour
at the end of the NJ turnpike waiting to pay the toll. It was backed up almost
4 miles. At the Delaware Turnpike toll booth I had to wait almost 30 minutes.
Sometimes it's better to take the long way.

They never mentioned where in Jersey they were going. If it's to someplace
by Cape May or Atlantic City the best way to go is via the Lewes-Cape May ferry
over the Delaware bay to the Garden State Parkway.

My one suggestion involves the one bottleneck that I have been trapped at during
holiday weekends. I suggest, instead of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, that I-95
should be used between Wilmington DE and Chester, PA. Use the Commodore Barry Bridge
(US 322) to New Jersey, then US 130 north to I-295. I don't know where in NJ you are
going, but you can now make good connections to any major road from I-295.

This routing is even more critical southbound, as I have gotten caught in bad traffic
trying to exit the NJ Turnpike southbound at exit 1 on several occasions.

But the NJ Turnpike backs up for up to 10 miles approaching the Del. Mem.
Bridge from the northeast. If it does, try I-295.

After a few months driving back and forth from Baltimore to Princeton
I found that the trip back is far, far worse traffic-wise. I never
had a problem with traffic on the trip up there.

I make the trip south often as well. One thing that I would add is that you will save more time if you
stay in NJ all of the way down on route 295. The traffic at the end of the NJ Turnpike going south is
always from the Turnpike's last toll, not the Delaware Memorial Bridge tolls. 295 dumps out right before
the bridge, and I have never run into traffic on the last 10 miles of 295.

Take the NJ Turnpike from I-95 in Delaware over the Delaware Memorial
Bridge...a much more direct and quicker route to northern NJ...(The
Turnpike is designated as I-95 from exits 7A to 18).

Yes, do not use I95 North of the Delaware Memorial Bridge until you are
sure the bridge burnt out by an exploding tanker this weekend has been
replaced... they say maybe by July, but plan on August or later. Get to
the Jersey side ASAP and use I 295 or the turnpike as the spirit moves
you.

This is obviously too late to help you for Memorial Day, but consider
taking US Route 1 up from Maryland to PA, then cutting over to I-95.
It's a little bit longer mileage-wise, but usually faster if there is
lots of traffic on I-95.

But do NOT, under ANY circumstances, continue on route 1 in NJ.
It is a nightmare! No matter what day of the week, no matter what
time of day, it is bad! bad! bad!

While this is too late for Memorial Day maybe it would be useful in the
future.

From Baltimore, consider I-83 north to I-81 north at Harrisburg then I-78
east to New Jersey, which goes to the Turnpike at Newark Airport. It is
not only a pleasant ride through Pennsylvania but there are also three
Cracker Barrel's to choose from at York, Hamburg and Fogelsville.

From the Susquehanna River area, US 222 is a nice ride but slower via
Lancaster and Reading to I-78 at Allentown and much of it is two lane but
the scenic Pennsylvania Dutch country makes up for it.
