I am running a simulation of a simple light source and detector placed slightly below the surface of an optical phantom in MCX cloud. Sometimes, a certain simulation will not complete. It says running numerous times and then the following message:

[31mMCX ERROR(-6):the launch timed out and was terminated in unit mcx_core.cu:3426 [0m

I notice that when I turn off the reflection calculations, the simulation will run. Are there any ways to get around this?

Thanks,
Lynley Pace

hi Lynley,

the "the launch timed out" error was a classic NVIDIA graphics driver watchdog time limit error, see FAQ #1

https://mcx.space/wiki/index.cgi?Doc/FAQ#I_am_getting_a_kernel_launch_timed_out_error_what_is_that

however, over the last 7-8 years, this issue only happens on Windows machines; for Linux desktops/servers, even the GPU is connected to a display, a long simulation no longer triggers this error. Because all my backend servers on MCX Cloud are all running Linux, I am a bit surprised to see you are getting this error message.

if you are seeing it again, can you please send me the job ID (a long hex string) so I can identify the cause of this issue?
