Dear interfaith friends,

So sorry about the very short notice with this announcement.  I just received it this morning.  I know that many communities of faith are deeply concerned about what's happening with immigration and refugee policy.  Perhaps some of you can dial in.

Peace,
Tom

DHS Center Call Invitation: Southwest Border Updates

for Leaders of Faith-Based  and Non-Governmental Organizations

Online Captioning

The DHS Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives (DHS Center) will be providing a high level situational awareness briefing for leaders of faith-based and non-governmental organization partners pertaining to the humanitarian aid mission on the southern border of the United States. Kevin Smith, Director of the DHS Center, will provide an overview of current activities of partners actively engaged in supporting the migrant population movement.

This call is not intended to provide coordination of resources or requests for assistance.  However, with the overwhelming response of organizations offering care and relief, the DHS Center wanted to provide this overview to mitigate spontaneous responses, consistent with community based organizations already active in the communities.

*Note: Please consider sharing this invitation, and dial-in 10 minutes early to allow time for entry to the moderated line before the call begins.*

Dear interfaith friends,

I received this message this morning and attended the phone call.  Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA, and someone from a fiath based community (I didn't get the name) spoke.  The gist of the half hour phone call was that faith based communities may be able to play a role in addressing humanitarian needs of people amassed at our southern border.

However, this was not an "all call emergency."  The call leaders were very fervent in saying that your faith based community should be in contact with an affiliate organization that routinely handles disaster response.  Many denominations have a national organization that does this kind of work.  Be in touch with that organization so that you can receive news of what specifically is needed.  We don't want to overwhelm the people who are already working hard at the border and would be further  stressed by an uncoordinated relief effort.  Coordination with national affiliate organizations is of the utmost importance.

If I get further notices I'll post them here.

I attended the Compassion,Peace & Justice conference this past week-end. Presbyterian Disaster Relief i(PDA) is coordinating our effort at the border. Susan Kerhbiel can direct us to host sites at the border.  I am going to contact Susan and inquire.  I way toying with the idea of having our New Castle Presbytery MAC committee organize a trip to Texas  to visit  one of our host sites to see if we could be of help.
Anybody want to feedback a response to this idea - please?
Blessings and peace, Terry
