Happy Summer McNear Friends!

Can you believe we are already two weeks into summer? Even though the weather started out a bit shaky, things are perfect for swimming, hiking, sports, and general fun. But just like other parts of our body, we need to use our brain to keep it in shape. This summer we have special programs set up for our McNear students. Don’t miss out on your chance to increase your brain power!

Marvelous Mathematician Club:
Summer Math Club invites students to practice their math facts 10 minutes each day for 30 days over the summer. When students memorize their math facts, their brain is free to focus on more complex math. To master something complex like long-division or fractions, the smaller steps need to be automatic. Memorizing the math facts has also been shown to boost a student's confidence and reduce their fears and anxiety about math. Members will receive an award certificate and an invitation to our back to school math party at McNear Park. For complete details, check out the link below: http://www.mcnearelementary.org/docs/marv_math_club_110613.pdf

Summer Reading Program:
Read, relax, and keep track of your reading this summer. Students who read and record their books over the summer will sharpen reading, writing, grammar, spelling,  and vocabulary skills. Who would want to pass up an opportunity like this? For complete details, check out the link below:

Summer Writing Program:
What goes hand in hand with reading? Writing of course! You are going to be busy with lots of activities this summer, why not write about them? Students can turn in their journal entries in the fall to be part of a writing celebration. For complete details, visit the link below:

Mrs. Bussey’s Book Lists:
For those of you that need a little guidance, Laura Bussey has put together a fabulous book list for student reading over the summer. http://www.mcnearelementary.org/summerreading.html

Renaissance Place
Our PTA buys a subscription to Renaissance Place each year which includes Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, Math Facts in a Flash, Home Connect, and more. We are making this service available to families during the summer. Below are some descriptions of what is available. If you need help getting going, please read the information on our wiki <http://mcnearelementary.pbworks.com>. If you do not know your log-in, please do these things:
  1. Use the user look up to find your username <https://hosted21.renlearn.com/282775/Public/RPM/Login/SchoolSelect.aspx>.
  2. If you don’t have a user name, please email jsu...@pet.k12.ca.us.

Accelerated Reader:
We are so excited about reading that in addition to our Summer Reading Program, we are opening Accelerated Reader for the summer. Students will be able to take quizzes on the books they read over the summer and track their progress right from home. Visit the home page of our wiki <http://mcnearelementary.pbworks.com> to log in to Accelerated Reader or to read the help files. Your child should take these quizzes on their own as the program provides feedback on their current reading levels and comprehension skills. This home access  is open now and will be closed after July 31, 2011 so we can prepare for the next school year.

AR Bookfinder:
Need some help finding a good book at the right level? Use the Accelerated Reader Bookfinder. Anyone can use this service to find a book at the right reading and interest level. All of the books in the Bookfinder are also available as quizzes in Accelerated Reader.

Renaissance Home Connect:
Home Connect allows parents to view student progress on all programs in Renaissance Learning (Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, and Math Facts in a Flash). Use your child’s log in to get access to Home Connect.

Math Facts in a Flash:
Students can practice their math facts this summer using Math Facts in a Flash. Log in through Home Connect and select the Math tab on the top and then the Math Facts in a Flash button. On the right side you can see the link to start practicing. If you see a message that says you need to start at school, you can come in to school to take the first test so you can use it at home. See our school calendar for open dates and times during this month. http://www.mcnearelementary.org/calendar.html
If you need help logging in, I made a video showing how to do it.

This list gives everyone some options for exercising their brain over the summer. Enjoy yourselves, and we will see you in the fall.
