First Blooms 2011, McNear Poets is the title of this year’s McNear poetry journal, reflecting over 100 original creations from 71 students who attended the poetry writing workshops held at lunch recesses during Poetry Celebration Week in March. All students who wrote poems at the workshops are invited to a special gathering in the library during upper and lower grade lunch recesses next Tuesday, May 17th, to receive their journals and share their poems with each other. Thanks to Kellee Young for the beautiful cover design for this year’s journal.
Special thanks to our parent poet and workshop leader, Donna Emerson, who for the past five years has inspired so many of our students to explore this written art form. We will miss her next year, as her daughter will be moving on to junior high, but we hope to carry on the program and continue to cultivate the enthusiasm of our young poets. If anyone knows of a local poet who might be interested in leading next year’s workshops, please come forward!
As Donna would say to all our poets:
“Now it's time to go out into the sun, sit on a large rock, soak up summer sounds, smells, and sights and write!!”
