Dear McLaren Park Enthusiasts – It was such a beautiful day today (especially after the soggy one-day rain of yesterday) that Linda and I decided to visit several parts of the Park that we had not seen for a while. Among these was the Native Plant Garden at the corner of Visitacion and Hahn.
Back in July 2022, this site was at its vegetative nadir, following the clearing of most of the then-recently-cut-down-trees at this corner. (I took and distributed several pictures of the site then. These are appended immediately below.)
I do not believe that everyone will agree with my perspective which is this… The Native Plant Garden is well-tended and is doing what was intended, providing a space for many healthy, interesting, native plants – presumably nurturing their own biota. (My favorite California buckeye is flourishing!)
Across Visitacion Avenue massive building and remodeling of the area are underway.
Life is change, some subjectively for the better, some subjectively for the worse. Subjectively I choose to feel that, on balance, the changes in this area, including the Native Plant Garden, are for the better.
I respect those who feel differently. But for me, the sojourn into McLaren Park today, remembering its overall condition and reputation as little as 10 or 20 years ago, made me feel fine and optimistic for its future. – Joe
