Jerry Garcia Amphitheater News

June was a busy month at the JG Amphitheater. June 8th was the 17th annual Omino Day celebration. Omino Day In Da Park began in 2007 in memory of Andrew “DJ Domino” Ele, a youth advocate, community activist and a budding pillar in the community. He was an inspiration to many and strived to create spaces for people to gather, share positivity and heal through music.

And SF Live /Illuminate’s 1st of 4 concerts on June 16th brought out over 2,000 fans on a sunny day to listen and dance to 3 fantastic acts that rocked the afternoon. One of the best things about SF Live shows—each one of their shows are caught on camera and captured in time so we can all relive these memories over again. Head on over to SFLive/Illuminate’s Facebook page where they post photo albums of EVERY SF Live show! Maybe you’ll spot yourself in the crowd!

Three other Illuminate/SF Live shows at the AMP are planned for Saturday, September 28th, Saturday, October 19th and Saturday, October 26th with concert times of 1-5pm. Details will follow as they become available.

Now, more entertainment is coming your way!

SF Shakespeare Camp - July 22 – August 1 - During these 2-week sessions, youth campers study Shakespeare’s theater in a fun and supportive atmosphere at the Amphitheater. SF Shakes’ professional theater practitioners lead interactive classes in Shakespeare’s poetry, clowning traditions, and stage combat. Make a date be at the amphitheater on the final day of camp when the youthful thespians perform an abridged Shakespeare play for family and friends.

Jerry Day - Saturday August 3, 11:30am - 4pm. Enjoy a musical afternoon celebrating Jerry Garcia. After the show, join the Jerry Night Pub Crawl, the after parties taking place around the Crocker-Amazon and Excelsior neighborhood local spots.

SFShakes presents Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” at McLaren Park, starting August 31 through September 8, Saturdays, Sundays, & Labor Day Monday at 2 pm

See Recology Artists in Dump Show

THE DUMP SHOW: A Collaboration between the Hosfelt Gallery and the Recology Artist in Residence Program

Where does something go when you throw it away? To the dump, of course.

The Dump Show is a collaboration with, and an homage to, the Recology Artist in Residence Program presented in the Hosfelt Gallery. It’s also an acknowledgement and celebration of the legacy of artists in the Bay Area working with found materials. Assembling 20 artists who have participated in the Recology program, the program explores the transformational methodologies and idiosyncratic materials of artists working with the things we cast off.

Please note: these events will be held at the Hosfelt Gallery, not at the Recology site.

July 13 - August 17, 2024
Film Screening: Thursday, July 18
Fashion Show: Thursday, August 8

Hosfelt Gallery is located at 260 Utah Street San Francisco, CA 94103

Create a hand cut recycled botanical collage with SF-based artist Austen Zombres. Austen has been creating a personal library of found cardboard packaging for over a decade and creating intricate figurative collage imagery with his material. Join us to take your paper arts game to the next level!

Astrological Embroidery with Angie Wilson - 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM   Thursday, September 5th

In this workshop, we will explore the map of the stars under which we were born. Each participant will choose to embroider the constellation of either their sun, moon, or rising signs (or that of another person if planning to make it a gift). This workshop is designed for all levels, so beginners will approach this project as a sampler and learn the essential, foundational embroidery stitches; intermediate and advanced participants can incorporate more complex stitches or opt to embroider their entire Birth Chart. The resulting piece can be incorporated into a pillow, quilt, jacket, or framed.

Gleneagles Named Top Course

California Golf & Travel Magazine features Gleneagles Golf Course at one of its “Nine of the Best Nine Hole Golf Courses in California”

“Gleneagles Golf Course at McLaren Park, San Francisco

Designed by Jack Fleming, who was an early protege of Dr. Alister MacKenzie while he built Cypress Point Golf Club, this full length nine-holer has captured and broken the hearts of many a golfer for decades. Both high handicappers and scratch players alike come here to test themselves on the challenging contours that make us all equal and humbled. Established in 1962 to much pomp and circumstance, Gleneagles Colf Course continues the tradition with the renovation of all nine greens with bentgrass (2010), the same grass varietal used by The Olympic Club, TPC Harding Park and most private clubs.” Nine of the Best Nine Hole Golf Courses in California | California Golf + Travel (calgolfnews.com)

In Memorium

Remembering Our Friends Who Left Us

We’ve recently lost two of our neighborhood colleagues, both San Francisco natives and both active community members: Marilyn Driscoll and Rose Ann Harris

We have an expanded remembrance of both women below.

Please let us know if we have missed listing a friend so we can remember them to the next issue.

Remembering Two Special People

Rose Ann Harris, one of the most recognized and prolific volunteers within District 11 and several other organizations and park groups, was a dear member of our FACE family. Rose Ann was “apolitical” in who or what she volunteered with to help, be it a large event, or a house party. Rose Ann would jump in and using her many years of experience as a waitress, would show the hosts or other volunteers how to organize any chaos in the kitchen and create a seamless service.

Known affectionately as the "Cat Lady," Rose Ann spent countless hours and resources rescuing feral cats, supporting endangered feline wildlife organizations, being “vacation housemother” when owners went out of town, and providing a shoulder to cry on at the loss of a feline companion. She also amassed a collection of cat art, cat figurines and cat clothes.

Rose Ann’s annual “Haunted Halloween” front yard was, for generations, the place to trick or treat. Spending a month decorating the long walk to her front porch, Rose Ann provided scary decorations of ghosts, bats, cobwebs and a “blood fountain” accompanied by ghoulish sound effects for hundreds of kids and their families year after year.

There will be a casual gathering at Gleneagles July 29th from 4-6pm with a “no-host” bar to remember her and share “Rose Ann” stories. If you can drop by and toast this beautiful lady who had such an impact on so many, please come.

Marilyn Driscoll moved into the Cayuga neighborhood in the mid-1970’s where she became an energetic supporter of the neighborhood, a valued member of the Cayuga Neighborhood Association, and a tireless booster of this part of the city.

Marilyn was a key part of the Cayuga neighborhood committee meetings that explored the need to create a supportive network for aging in place.

Along with Glenda Hope, Marilyn was instrumental in creating San Francisco’s first aging in place network, the Cayuga Community Connectors, in 2012. Her impact is shown today, as this first Connecter group has now grown to 8 Community Connector groups supporting many more residents.

Keep Marilyn in your memory whenever you join one of the many Community Connector programs available to many San Francisco residents. Thanks, Marilyn.

As always, send us any ideas, events, articles to post, or just want to contact us, please send an e-mail to faces...@gmail.com
