It's been awhile since I have written but I do read all the comments when they come through. Hoping everyone is having a fun summer despite the San Francisco wind and fog. Yesterday afternoon (Sunday 7/25) at about 2pm my 9 year old daughter and I went for our usual McLaren stroll. We went by the Redwood Grove playground first, which was hustling and bustling with picnickers and kids having a great time in the wind sheltered cove near the redwoods. Next we decided to venture down to McNab Lake and Louis Sutter playground with the goal of eventually going down to the University Mound reservoir to see if the goats are still in action there.
Upon arriving at the Louis Sutter Playground we were greeted by a disturbed person who just stared at people as they played in the playground and at the picnickers celebrating there, which were all full of families with kids. I watched this deranged African American person, about 30 years old wearing bagging jeans down below his hips, a gray sweatshirt and black court shoes, approach the picnickers and intimidate each one of them for what it looked like was alcohol but I couldn't be sure without asking. Then he would step back on to the path for a few moments, guzzle the beverage and go back into the death stare intimidation routine until he received more of what he wanted.
I called the park rangers and let them know there was a person that was definitely intimidating and scarng the visitors to the lake and playground and that they should come immediately. I gave them a complete description. As my daughter and many other kids continued to play at the lakes edge enjoying the baby ducklings, the deranged man decided abruptly to walk down to the basketball court where he immediately approached a person in a parked car demanding something. Then he walked in the middle of the park road, discarded his trash on the street and stood in front of the toddlers playground and disrobed with his pants down and all his private parts there for all the kids to see and urinated.
I called the park rangers again and let them know the situation and they decided the police should now be dispatched but still no one came. So much for us visiting the goats at the reservoir, for no one can pass the path without seeing this angry and obviously mental person urinating in full glory with his pants down to his shoes at the entrance to the children's playground at the bottom of the hill. Thank god my daughter just missed seeing him before we turned around. Several park goers stopped and were forming a crowd wondering what was going on. I waited at the top of the hill for any response from any law enforcement and nothing came. After about 15 minutes and because I was with my daughter I could not risk following the deranged person any further and went back up the hill to the Redwood Grove playground but I couldn't help but think how so many childrens lives were affected by this one sick person on this day. It was very disheartening and disgusting at the same time.
So did the park rangers ever come? The police? Why does it take so long to get a response when we are supposed to always have our own park rangers in the park? How many more meetings with the rangers and the police before McLaren finally gets what it was promised over and over? If we want to keep McLaren a family friendly and safe park going forward we must insist McLaren is a priority for park rangers to remain and patrol every weekend going forward and not a last priority to send a ranger when the rest of the city's events don't conflict!
Please make this a priority everyone. These post pandemic times are very scary especially for our city's youth. We all worked so hard to make McLaren a better place. A few events like this and McLaren could once again go back to its darker days... before you know it, we'll all be at square one again.
Sincerely,
Chuck Farrugia
