Hi, Everyone…I am still working on the “chat” notes from the September 22 McLaren Park Collaborative Zoom Meeting.Sorry for the delay.  I will fill a few sentences here and there to help with the  context. Expect it fairly  soon

The chat notes will likely be in a Word document and hopefully will be easy to understand. Feel free to add your own context to them when they are sent

General summary of the meeting: We had a very detailed summary of how the decisions on the removal of some trees for the Native Plant Garden on Visitacion Ave & Hahn   was reached.  An independent arborist explained the various steps & conditions that are examined  to determine how trees will be accessed. Which ones have enough life left to be worth saving, past their natural life and or which trees are considered dangerous due to disease and potential failing branches. These discussions among park folks are always stressful due to the very passionate views and scientific theories that need to be discussed. You will see in the chat, a number of quotes and references to other expanded materials. The trees that are scheduled to be removed are clearly marked (at Visitacion and Hahn). Importantly there is funding to replace the number of trees removed by 2-1.  The selection of the new trees, bushes and other plant life had been presented at an earlier meeting and we can ask for it to be provided if anyone would like to see the vision for this site.  There are no further approvals needed but more planning and some additional funding to create the new garden will be needed. This will not be a fenced off garden, it is an open space that is designed to beautify that corner of the park. With a goal to be a home to more pollinators---bees, butterflies etc.

We started the meeting with a report from Daniel Choi, McLaren Gardening Supervisor. The first questions referred to the “temporary” changes to the partially closed Shelley Drive. Note: A full discussion of what to do on a permanent basis is months away and will follow public meetings and overall approval by the Board of Supervisors and the SF RP Commission.

NEXT PROPOSED ML COLLABORATIVE MEETING:  Wednesday, October 20th. 7pm   Agenda topics and Zoom link to be sent soon.

Hope to see many of you in the park before we meet again. Happy Fall!

Linda

Good morning, Everyone – While we’re in North Carolina visiting family I have the only laptop.  So, at Linda’s request and on her behalf I’m attaching and forwarding the “chat” notes referenced in her email of yesterday.

My best to the Collaborative and All working on behalf of McLaren Park,

another great article from Conservation Sense and Nonsense about a bird species with a lot of analogies to the flora and fauna of the parks of SF:  https://milliontrees.me/2021/10/01/polarized-views-of-nature-mirror-our-politics-2/?unapproved=122465&moderation-hash=ea1083452fa8c86f86621d17340ce6b4#comment-122465
This article about the polarized views of conservation and how similar they are to our polarized politics was published by Conservation Sense and Nonsense 7 years ago. It is truer now than it…
