Starting in late 2022, Rec and Park conducted extensive community and stakeholder engagement to get feedback on how to prioritize the investment of $6 million from the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond in McLaren Park.
Throughout June and July 2025, we attended several standing community group meetings, circling back with community stakeholders to share proposed updates to the 2018 Vision Plan and project priorities for 2020 bond funding, and receive final feedback before taking a McLaren Vision Plan update and project funding allocations to the Rec and Park Commission later this summer.
Thank you to the McLaren Collaborative, PROSAC, and Portola Neighborhood Association for hosting us!
Thank you to the folks who attended and gave feedback, as well as to everyone who has been involved in meetings, site walks, focus groups, and other conversations throughout the years. Your advocacy and input shaped the 2018 McLaren Park Vision Plan, this 2025 Vision Plan update, and make McLaren Park the amazing Citywide park that it is!
You can check out our meeting presentation which walks through what we've learned and are recommending—based on stakeholder input, site assessments, and the realities of available resources.
Many projects have occurred in McLaren Park in recent years, guided by the Vision Plan, and fueled by 2012 Neighborhood Park Bond funding. The final Tier 1 project funded by the 2012 Bond, the McLaren Trails Priority Improvements project, is well underway and slated to be complete by early 2026.
There are many other projects currently in design and planning, and many more park improvements that are still needed.
Throughout engagement we heard loud and clear a desire to fix the infrastructure and keep McLaren wild! The draft recommendations center nature while addressing needed improvements across the three Vision Plan pillars of program areas, gateways, and accessibility & connectivity. Staff have written grants, developed partnerships, and leveraged other local funding sources to triple the impact of the $6 million in 2020 Bond investment, and well-position McLaren Park for future investment.
Many thanks to the San Francisco voters who overwhelmingly approved the 2012 and 2020 Bonds! Your support helps ensure that San Franciscans have access to safe and welcoming parks and open spaces.
