Work is continuing on University Hill in McLaren Park, between Louis Sutter Playground and the courts near Mansell. The new ribbon trail is almost complete, with the finishing touches and accessibility inspections scheduled for this week and next.
This week our contractor will also be removing a segment of asphalt pathway and adjacent social trail just south of the Big Kids playground. There will be reduced parking availability in the south lot, due to equipment staging, and pedestrian access will be impacted in the area. For your own safety, please follow all signs and stay out of closed areas (see red on map below showing bounds of temporary closure; yellow notes open paths and trails).
Once the ribbon trail reopens early next week (shown in green on the plan below), our contractor will begin work on building split rail fencing and decommissioning the social trails in the sensitive grassland area to the east (see fuchsia in plan). This decommissioning work is aligned with the Department's Significant Natural Resources Management Plan. Please use designated paths and social trails (shown in green and yellow in the plan) and do not enter the sensitive native grassland habitat. Removing access from this area is key for restoration of this sensitive grassland habitat.
As a result of community advocacy for keeping some steep dirt trails in this area, we will not be decommissioning the easternmost social trail, which extends from University at Dwight to the old parking lot near Olmstead. The project is also leaving open the connector social trail from the north end of upper University (south of Olmstead) to this steep trail.
