Highlights, News & Announcements

"Finders Keepers" Community Day at India Basin Waterfront Park September 6

The San Francisco Arts Commission and Rec and Park announced last month the successful culmination of a yearlong Artist-in-Residence Program at India Basin Waterfront Park.

Local artists Afatasi the Artist and Conni McKenzie spent the past year embedded in the park's transformation, gathering stories, building community, and creating original works that reflect the culture, history, and everyday life of the Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) neighborhood.

Afatasi the Artist will unveil her project at an event on Saturday, September 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. "Finders Keepers" is an interactive experience inviting BVHP residents to rediscover India Basin Waterfront Park (900 Innes Avenue) and the surrounding neighborhood in fresh, meaningful ways. The event will start at Shipwright's Cottage in the park and will feature local food, music, a scavenger hunt for hand-welded sculptures, and a live welding demo by the artist. Additional activities include jump houses, free haircuts, and community rowing with Rocking the Boat.

Finders Keepers seeks to reclaim public space for creativity and community and pays tribute to Bayview’s legacy of skilled makers and artisans—especially Black women welders who worked in the shipyards during WWII. For more information, click the link below.

Poolside's Daytime Disco in Union Square on September 7

Come out for the next free downtown concert in our parks! The launch of the first-ever Daytime Disco event is by design. San Francisco is an important part of Poolside’s history, a city Paradise had called home for years: first as a San Francisco State University alumnus, and later as a DJ and promoter of the famed Blow Up SF parties.

Sunset Dunes Survey Open through 2025

With the beautiful Labor Day weekend weather, Sunset Dunes welcomed more than 28,000 visitors to the park. As the park continues to grow in popularity, we're inviting the community to share feedback on the current park features. Let us know what’s working, what’s not, and what you'd love to see more of at Sunset Dunes.

We will use your feedback to keep improving the current park experience and for future planning purposes. This 2025 community engagement process, along with site feasibility studies, will support a visioning and planning process to begin in 2026.

Provide feedback through our Sunset Dunes survey, which is live and open through the end of the year, at the link below.

Rossi Pool Earns LEED Platinum Certification

In 2022, Rec and Park completed a full renovation of Rossi Pool (600 Arguello Boulevard), featuring several upgrades to make the facility more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable. These features earned the project Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification upon opening. LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, recognizing healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings that provide environmental and social benefits.

We are proud to announce the facility has recently earned LEED Platinum certification—the highest possible certification awarded and the pinnacle of excellence in green building. Thank you to the project team and staff that made this possible. Learn more about the renovation at the link below.

Coyote Pupping Season in our Parks

As we hit the dog days of summer, it means that we're in the midst of coyote pupping season. While coyotes are generally wary of humans, parent coyotes may become territorial if you or your pet stumbles upon their den.

To foster a safe coexistence between yourself and our natural neighbors, please take the following precautions:

  • Never feed coyotes or any wildlife
  • Keep dogs on leashes in our parks, unless in a designated off-leash dog play area
  • Only admire coyotes from a distance

If you encounter a coyote, slowly back away carrying any small children or pets. Do not run. You may also scare the coyote away by appearing large and making loud noises.

If you encounter a coyote or see someone putting out food for a coyote, report it to Animal Care and Control (ACC) at (415) 554-9400, or by email at a...@sfgov.org.

For more information, visit ACC's coyote page at the link below.
