Message From OEWD: OEWD plays a critical role in advancing Mayor Lurie’s vision for San Francisco’s comeback—cutting red tape, activating streets and storefronts, and driving policies that spur housing development, create jobs, grow talent, and strengthen the economy. As an agency delivering end-to-end economic solutions, OEWD offers programs and resources spanning business development, community economic development, workforce development, small business support, joint development, and industry engagement.

49 South Van Ness, San Francisco  RSVP at  https://digital.forms.sf.gov/t/4F9hSXyKi6us

Heading into a difficult budget season, the City will need to ensure that its investments are producing outcomes for San Francisco residents, businesses, and communities. OEWD would like to hear your ideas to help them realize the equitable outcomes we want to see in the communities and industries we serve. Please join them at one of two Budget Town Halls and make your voice heard. Meetings are open to the public.

  • Downtown Revitalization through business attraction, storefront activation, development incentives, public space improvements, etc.

  • Business Support: Support policies and resources that help businesses start, grow, and thrive.

Insights from the Workforce Division’s fall listening sessions will be incorporated into the broader findings from the town halls and survey, and all information will be used to guide the development of our budget. These findings will be shared via email once the process has concluded.

In addition to attending one of the meetings, OEWD also asks that you fill out this short survey. Be sure to select your preferred language in the upper-right-hand corner.

Herz Recreation Center Opens in John McLaren Park with New Public Artwork Unveiled

“Reflection and Projection” by artist Sanjay Vora celebrates belonging, play, and community in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley

The new Herz Recreation Center has officially opened, delivering a modern, multifunctional recreation hub to the area, welcoming residents from the Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods. The Rec Center is located within Herz Playground, a six-plus-acre park in John McLaren Park. At the center’s entrance is a large-scale public artwork Reflection & Projection, an 8-by-10-foot, interactive installation created by artist Sanjay Vora

The 11,500 square foot facility features a full-size basketball court with bleacher seating for 200 people; a multipurpose room for community rentals and wellness classes; a welcoming lobby and reception area; staff offices; restrooms; a kitchen; and ample storage space—creating a flexible space designed to serve residents of all ages.

The project also includes significant improvements to connect the surrounding neighborhood, including new and upgraded pathways linking Herz Playground with the Sunnydale Resource Center and the nearby areas of Visitacion Valley and Sunnydale. Additional amenities include an outdoor fitness terrace, a nature exploration and picnic area, and thoughtfully designed landscaping. Landscape improvements include meadow grassland, native hillside plantings, a lawn near the ballfields, and stormwater filtration in low-lying areas.

In addition to the new Rec Center, Rec and Park completed a $3.38 million renovation of Herz Playground in fall 2023 as part of the Let’sPlaySF! initiative, two outdoor basketball courts, a ballfield, the indoor Coffman Pool, and expansive open space for recreation and relaxation.

Mayors Lurie, Breed and Brown were among those paying tribute, along with Phil's wife, Emily. Phil served SFRPD for 16 1/2 years and was a strong supporter of parks, especially our southeast facilities. Phil Ginsburg will be missed!

The COF is now in its third Bond cycle with $6 million allocated from the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond for the next round of awards.

What are the COF's Goals?

The COF has five main policy goals:

  1. Foster community stewardship
