Saturday, Saturday, Saturday!!! This cuming Saturday, May 2, 2026, (the first Saturday of the month) is the Volunteer Workday at John McLaren Park. We meet at the main parking lot for the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater (21 John F. Shelley Dr.), We start at 9:30 AM and work until noon. The work this time is pulling wild Radish and Italian Thistle from the Mansell Highlands Grasslands. We do this work every year around this time. I honestly think that we are gaining on the invaders. The Rec and Park folks will probably park the trucks at the bottom of the hill at the intersection of Wilde Ave. and Ervine St. Parking is sometimes difficult there. I will mark a flour and chalk trail from the Amphitheater lot to the worksite. It's a nice downhill hike. SF Rec and Park will provide tools and gloves, water and snacks. The snacks are special from Arizmendi Bakery. If you have your own gloves, bring them. The radish don't fight back but the Italian Thistle can. So, long sleeves and pants are recommended, but not necessary. I haven't seen any Blackberry in the grasslands. SFH3 will provide additional snacks and BEER. We also provide rides from the Glen Park BART Station to the worksite. Be at the station before 9:00 AM and let me know that you need a ride. I will check the forecast and give more details in later posts.
