|
| Our community recently gathered at the Minnie Lovie Ward Rec Center for the annual luncheon honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., hosted by the SF Recreation and Parks Department. This cherished tradition brings neighbors together for a delicious meal, inspiring program, and heartfelt recognition of those who make our parks special.
This year, the SFRPD Nursery in Golden Gate Park was celebrated for creating beautiful table centerpieces, which guests could take home. The Minnie Lovie Ward Rec Center Community Advisor Committee was also honored, represented by Dr. Veronica Hunnicutt, Mary Harris, and Al Harris.
Special guests included Mayor Daniel Lurie, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and Supervisors Shamann Walton (District 10) and Chyanne Chen (District 11). Attendees had the chance to connect with many Rec and Park staff and leaders, including Kat Anderson (President of the RP Commission) and Sarah Madland (Interim General Manager).
This luncheon is one of the most uplifting events our parks department hosts each year. If you missed it, mark your calendar for early January 2027—the next luncheon date will be posted on the RPD website. Don’t miss out on great food and even better company! |

The public is invited to participate in PG&E’s Virtual Information Session on Pilot Neighborhood Decarbonization Programs. The session will provide information on Senate Bill 1221 and the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) voluntary program to identify priority neighborhoods for potential projects that may transition some gas customers to cost‑effective, zero‑emission alternatives. February 26 at 4 p.m. (Pacific Time) Join Online Web link: Join via Teams Meeting ID: 249 722 867 341 31 Passcode: MQ7tx95J Join by Phone Dial: 1-415-906-0873 Phone conference ID: 841 701 904#SB 1221 requires the state’s utility regulator to identify neighborhoods up for gas line replacement, which can then become “neighborhood decarbonization zones.” As long as two-thirds of neighbors agree to the project, the entire community would get free electric appliances to replace those formerly powered by gas. The gas utility would be relieved of providing gas service in this area and would not replace the grid of gas lines underground. These projects would only go forward if the cost of swapping out gas appliances for electric ones would be cheaper than replacing the gas line infrastructure itself |

The McLaren Park trails project continues. Notable recent trail completions include: 1) The “ribbon” trail connecting the Louis Sutter Playground (bottom), Hidden Bridges area (middle), and the Tai Chi/Tennis Court area near University and Mansell Streets is complete. This multi-use trail includes accessibility design. It is a much easier way to get up this hillside than the old trails. This project also closes the “University Slope” hillside to all (human) users, including decommissioning trails such as the switchback trail built 15 years ago with V-O-Cal and SFUR. 2) New trails around the amphitheater provide a variety of routes. 3) New trails around the Upper Reservoir include a re-build of the accessible ramp from the parking lot to the reservoir, and a new bridge connecting the reservoir to switchback trail to the north (built with SFUR over 15 years ago), and wetland habitat improvements. See the photo above. 4) Re-routing and hardening the main connector between the upper reservoir and the amphitheater, a connector from Shelley Drive and Mansell St., and more. |
