Does anybody know what specifically DID happened today?  or can anyone insights into the neighborhood dynamics or efforts to improve overall neighborhood safety?  This was at least the second lockdown in the last 6 months.  There was one in late October.

Dear McKinley Community,  

It is our commitment at McKinley to ensure our school environment is safe for students and conducive to teaching and learning. Being a strong family and community partner means we have a commitment to providing timely communication on security incidents when they arise.   

At 10:30 a.m. today, school administration was alerted to police activity in the vicinity T Steet and Lincoln. The report was that possible shots had been fired.  While our school community was not involved in the incident, we take reports of this nature extremely seriously and out of an abundance of caution, we went into alert status during this time. Alert status means all exterior doors are locked and entry to the building is not permitted without proper identification. All students and staff were safely inside their classrooms during this elevated building operating status.  We waited, as per protocol, for the police to tell us to lock down or remain on alert status. 

We locked down for a few minutes as MPD and DCPS police investigated and were cleared to resume normal building operations very quickly, and the school day will proceed as usual including normal dismissal procedures.  If you called the school during the lockdown or shortly thereafter, your call may not have been answered or you may have been put on hold or hurried off the phone.  This is because we have tasks we must do for safety and the office personnel must lock down in a separate area, away from the phones.

Please be assured that no one was harmed, and we followed all safety and reporting protocols as we investigated this possible threat. How. do we get more info on context regarding the source of the bomb threats and the neighborhood shootings and what is being done to address them?  Very little information seems to be shared with Principal Jones.  The notices we receive are very standard -- there was a problem, there is no longer a problem, everyone is safe now.   I have followed up with the principal in the past and she only knows what she is told -- which isn't much. 

In addition to the bomb scares, my son walks home through the neighborhood or he walks to the metro.  As a citywide application school, I am sure many other students have similar commutes and other parents likely have similar concerns.  Teachers and school staff are no more bullet proof than our children are and we must be concerned for their safety as well.  I am prepared for the usual "You think it's bad here?  Things are SO much worse at ________ (fill in the blank).

I believe the McKinley parent community should establish its standing with the MPD, ANC and others as interested parties who deserve engagement and an update on public safety matters surrounding the school.  Maybe we can even help by adding our voices.
