Dear friends,

DC schools are primed for historic investment next year following the Mayor’s announcement last month that base per student funding would increase by nearly 6 percent. Yesterday, she further detailed additional funding for school-based mental health programs, public charter school facilities, nursing services at public schools, and out-of-school time grants and programming. And, as schools seek to recover from the pandemic, they will have access to an additional $36 million over the next two years. This funding will push DC's overall education budget to $2.2 billion. You can learn more here.

Education Forward DC is proud to partner with over 40 organizations in the DC Students Succeed campaign to secure and build on these investments in the budget and beyond. Launched last week, DC Students Succeed aims to equitably fund and support DC schools and students, attract and support Black and brown education talent, and expand programming that meets students’ and families’ needs and interests. We encourage you to learn more about the campaign’s priorities, partners, and more at www.dcstudentssucceed.org!

DC Policy Center releases annual report on state of DC schools
Virtual learning was widespread but often inadequate for students, teachers, and families in school year 2020-21, according to the latest State of DC Schools report from the DC Policy Center. The annual report provides a systemwide overview of DC public education and examined the efforts of schools to reach families and meet students' needs and offered recommendations on how to track recovery progress moving forward.
PAVE parent raises need for greater investment in mental health
DC has invested big in school-based mental health over the years. But, the pandemic has meant greater mental health challenges for students. They'll need even more resources & services at every public school, said PAVE parent advocate Kisha Clark in an op-ed recently published in the Washington Post.
Applications for School Leader Lab’s school leader program close Mar. 25
Leaders are essential to creating excellent schools. And during times of rapid change, support and community for leaders is more important than ever. Applications are now open for School Leader Lab’s 2022 DC School Leader Cohort. The program is an 18-month, cross-school program that develops exceptional leaders in DC schools and focuses on antiracism, people, and academic leadership skills. If you are a principal, vice-principal, dean, or instructional leader looking to take the next step in your development, we encourage you to apply today. Applications will be accepted until March 25, 2022.
DC Board Leadership Academy kicks off
Education Board Partners (EBP) kicked off a DC Board Leadership Academy (BLA) in January to prepare a cohort of 25 Black and Latinx candidates to serve in leadership roles on the governing boards of organizations in the city’s education sector. Through a six-month community of practice, the BLA fellows are linked in training and collaborative work to explore the most critical issues facing board leaders and will receive coaching to assume board and committee chair roles. EBP is also working with several of our grantees to assess their boards’ opportunities for growth and succession planning with a focus on racial equity.
ICYMI: Recent DC Education News
  • DCPS announced a new partnership with XQ to reimagine high schools. DC+XQ will be a districtwide initiative to rethink the future of high school across DC Public Schools. Each participating DCPS school team will get guidance, support, and inspiration from DC+XQ as they generate their own unique, innovative plans for high school redesign.
  • Garrison Elementary School’s principal is prioritizing persistent outreach to help overcome some of his families’ hesitance to get their student vaccinated against COVID-19. Those personal conversations seem to be paying off: 80 percent of students have gotten at least one shot.
  • DC Public Schools will be mask optional beginning March 16 while many charter schools will keep mask requirements in place for now.
  • “Nearly 8 in 10 public school parents in the nation’s capital approve of how their children’s schools handled education during the pandemic disruptions, though most say the city should still be offering more virtual learning options,” according to The Washington Post, which released the findings of a poll on DC education issues last month.
Education Forward DC Updates
  • Less than one year into our second fund, Education Forward DC has secured almost half of the $62 million of its five-year fund goal, thanks to support from our local and national partners! We are thrilled and optimistic about what these resources can do for DC students & families.

Thanks for sharing.  They aren't connected to reality. Such ridiculous happy talk.  No contact information.  Just propaganda.  I signed up.  I also called them.  No one answers the phone.  Left a message that 50 kids are in a math class and McKinley HS has a part time principal.  Doubt they will call me back. Smells like it's a campaign for charter schools.

Some have suggested it’s a campaign — for re-election.
