Welcome McFatter
Family!
I want to begin by thanking everyone who donated to the SGA Annual Harvest Drive. This was a district wide event that had each school focus on varied parts of the holiday meal. I am sure the recipients will enjoy more than a supper thanks to your support of this valuable project.
At lunchtime on November 15th, we celebrated Student Appreciation Day where outside organizations, classes, and clubs set up tables with activities to celebrate our amazing students; including tasty pumpkin bread for all who wanted a taste of fall. We hope everyone had fun. Thank you to everyone who participated. Additionally, on November 16th, we held the Class of 2019 Ring Ceremony at lunch. It was a special moment for the members of the class and their families who participated.
After several requests of parents for information, I am including information below about “BTC Foundation” donation. If you are not familiar with the event, this is a fun filled night out for adults in the spring where we raise scholarship money for our students at the three technical colleges. Money marked for “McFatter” will go directly to the students at McFatter. For now, we are collecting baskets and bigger items to raffle off to raise scholarship money. If you are aware of a company who would like to support the event, please contact me or Lynn Goldman (her information is below).
As always, there is a lot more information below…
Take care,
Lillie Henry

BTC Foundation Event:
The Broward Technical Colleges (BTC); Atlantic, McFatter, and Sheridan; are joining together to raise funds that will help make students’ education dreams come true! Save the date of Tuesday, March 20, 2018 and be part of our Foundation Scholarship Dining Extravaganza at the Signature Grand in Davie. One hundred percent of the dollars raised will go toward assisting students in continuing their education.
Building on our extraordinary success over the past sixteen years, the event will be a Wine and Dine Extravaganza showcasing signature dishes from local restaurants and caterers. As an added bonus, the event will also feature our own talented chefs and students from the Technical Colleges. Accompanying the wonderful food and wine, an extraordinary silent auction adds to the fun of this worthwhile event. Past attendees agree that “it is a fabulous event for a great cause”. This year our theme is Jersey’s & Jeans.
In addition to raising scholarship dollars for current students to continue their education, the intent is to attract new students to our programs. BTC offers over 80 programs in the following areas: Adult Education, Apprenticeships, Architecture & Engineering, Arts, A/V Technology & Communications, Automotive Technology, Building Trades, Business Technology & Administration, Commercial Vehicle Driving, Construction, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Education, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Fire Science, Health Sciences, Hospitality & Tourism, Human Services, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Marine Technology, Marketing, Spa Services, Transportation, Distribution & Logistics. Visit www.BrowardTechnicalColleges.com for details. Guests will be contributing $50 per person to attend this spectacular event. We encourage and welcome your participation.
Either check (payable to Broward Education Foundation-Atlantic, McFatter or Sheridan Account), on-line payment (http://BrowardEdFoundation.org/jerseys-jeans-tickets) or specific in-kind donations would be welcomed and appreciated for our auctions. All contributions are tax deductible. The Atlantic, McFatter and Sheridan Scholarship Foundations are authorized by the Broward Education Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 corporation.

Transcripts - Some students are still confused over the transcripts request process. All transcript requests need to be made through Family Connection (see attached document). For schools that use the Common College Application, in addition to their own application, students need to indicate how they are applying to the school. If the student does not indicate this, we are unable to send transcripts to that school. For Common App schools: the counselor will upload the student's transcripts as part of their counselor recommendation. There are four schools in Florida: FSU, UF, FL Poly, and FAU, that are using the SSAR (Self-reported Student Academic Record system). They do not want transcripts until they ask for them, which is after the student has been offered admission. All hard copy transcripts need to be picked up from Ms. Martin.
A student can check on the status of their transcript requests by going in to their family connection account. Click on the Colleges tab. Click on transcripts, which is listed on the left hand side of the page. Click on view the status of all my transcript requests. The student will see the school name, the date the transcript was requested, and the date the transcript was sent. Additionally, there is a confirmation code that the student can use, when contacting the school. Keep in mind that while the eDoc process is more reliable, it takes longer to process. Many schools have stated that it can take 14 business days to process eDocs.
FAFSA Open - The 18-19 Free Application For Federal Financial Aid opened up on Oct. 1, 2017. It is strongly encouraged that all seniors complete a FAFSA as soon as possible, even if they do not believe they will qualify for need based aid. Many schools have non-need based scholarships that are triggered by students having a completed FAFSA. A common deadline for many schools is Dec. 15th. Be sure to complete your FAFSA's early.
SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2017-2018 SAT and ACT test dates. Pay attention to the registration deadlines.
Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year. Both of these tests are college entrance exams. Schools will accept these tests equally. It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT. This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other. Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student. At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free. If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent. It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools. Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.
Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year). Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers. If a student were to take advantage of all of the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500. It is well worth the time to complete an application to see if you qualify.
Fee Waivers are
now available in the BRACE office for students who qualify for
free or reduced lunch.
