News from Ms. Lynn, BRACE Advisor (Multiple attachments):

Please call (754)321-5805 with any questions you may have regarding BRACE News.

Class of 2018 - Save the Date(s): May 7th - Senior Awards Ceremony & May 31st - Class of 2018 Graduation Ceremony - Details to follow

We would like to congratulate the following students who were offered admission to their various universities.  Shaneze Douglas - FSU & U Mississippi, Andre George - FSU, FAU, NSU & St. Thomas, Noah Lang - NSU & UCF, David Lustgartern - FSU & Loyola, Samantha Nunez - FSU, New College & UM, and Noah Zambrano - Florida Institute of Technology, Purdue, & University of Illinois.  Please make sure that you stop by my office to let me know and to put a flag pin on the college admissions map.

Today is a big day for many of our students.  It is the day that the University of Florida will release their admissions decisions (after 6:00 pm).  Students should check their student portal for their admissions decision.  Good Luck to all of you who applied to UF.

I was at a BRACE meeting earlier this week.  One of the speakers was Hege Ferguson, the Director of Admission at Florida State University.  She shared details about what goes in to an admissions decision and reinforced just how competitive college admissions have become.  This year FSU had a record- breaking number of applications (over 50,500).  The majority of the applicants were more than worthy of admissions.  However, every school has a limited number of seats to offer incoming students (FSU - 6200 seats).  Schools have to use the application packet to determine what is "the best fit" for the student and for the school.  As an example of just how competitive it can be: the average student who was offered admission to FSU for the Fall had a 4.1 - 4.5 GPA with test scores of 28-32 ACT or 1290-1400 SAT.  Summer averages are: 3.9 - 4.4 GPA, 26-30 ACT, and 1230 - 1340 SAT.  I don't say this to scare anyone.  I say it because this is the reality of what our students are dealing with.  Students need to work hard to get the best grades that they can get, prepare for the SAT and/or ACT, and get involved (community service, extra-curricular activities, etc.).  Ms. Ferguson mentioned that they are looking for students with "Purposeful Direction in Education."  It is not about the number of AP, IB, AICE or Dual Enrollment credits a student takes.  It is about having balance and getting the best grades possible.

Also mentioned at the meeting is that more of our state universities will be using the SSAR (Self-reported Student Academic Record).  Currently FSU, UF, Florida Polytechinc University, FAU and New College are using the SSAR.  UNF and FGCU have discussed the possibility that they will also use it for next year's applicants.

Spring College Fair - Our annual Spring college fair will be held this Tuesday, Feb. 13th from 12:30 - 2:30.  The fair will be held in the ARC gymnasium.  We have 50 colleges, universities and military branches who have registered to attend.  Attached is a list of the schools who have registered.  The fair is the perfect time to help our underclassmen research various schools.  It is also a great time for our seniors to get questions answered to help them make their final decision.  I encourage students to stop by during their lunch to speak with the representatives.  In preparation of next week's fair, I have included the link below of questions to ask when researching colleges and universities.

https://www.fastweb.com/college-search/articles/questions-to-ask-when-considering-potential-colleges

Interesting Information - I was at a financial aid training recently.  It was mentioned that if a student starts the FAFSA, but does not submit it, the FAFSA will only be saved in the system for 30 days.  Many students think that they have submitted their FAFSA and, in reality, they got to the end and hit save.  You must hit submit.  It is a good idea for students to check with FAFSA and or the school/s to see if their FAFSA is complete.  They should also check with the schools to see when they can expect financial aid award letters, as each school has a different process.

Broward Schools has organized multiple sessions to help our families complete their FAFSA.  See attached flyer for dates and details.

Check out the following article regarding changes to the Bright Futures Scholarship program: http://sunshinestatenews.com/story/senate-passes-permanent-expansion-bright-futures-scholarship-program.

Our sister school, Sheridan Technical High School, is organizing an Ivy League college tour, which is scheduled for next November.  They are opening it up to McFatter, Atlantic, and Pembroke Pines Charter Schools.  Check out the attached flyer for details.

FAFSA - Every year millions of dollars of grant money goes unused.  Aa way for our students to get the maximum amount of financial help, the district has tasked us with a FAFSA challenge.  To date we have 69 of our 141 seniors who have completed their FAFSA.  I urge our families to complete this FAFSA as soon as possible as many schools have priority deadlines. A common priority date for many schools is Dec. 15th.  Students need to check with their individual schools to check their deadline.  Keep in mind that completing the FAFSA is opening up the opportunity for students to get money to help with their educational expenses.  The money that is offered could be free (grants and scholarships), borrowed (loans), or earned (work study).  Families can always say no to what is offered (in particular loans).  You don't know what you can get until you apply.

I encourage every senior to complete the Broward Education Foundation Scholarship application.  It is probably one of the easiest applications.  Broward Education Foundation - Deadline: April 2nd - Award: Varies

This is an extremely simple application that is available to graduating seniors.  There are many scholarships under the BEF umbrella.  Students can complete one application and be reviewed for multiple awards.  The application and details can be found at: BrowardEdFoundation.org/apply

Transcripts - Some students are still confused over the transcripts request process.  All transcript requests need to be made through Family Connection (see attached document). For schools that use the Common College Application, in addition to their own application, students need to indicate how they are applying to the school.  If the student does not indicate this, we are unable to send transcripts to that school.  For Common App schools: the counselor will upload the student's transcripts as part of their counselor recommendation.  There are four schools in Florida: FSU, UF, FL Poly, and FAU, that are using the SSAR (Self-reported Student Academic Record system).  They do not want transcripts until they ask for them, which is after the student has been offered admission.  All hard copy transcripts need to be picked up from Ms. Martin.

A student can check on the status of their transcript requests by going in to their family connection account.  Click on the Colleges tab.  Click on transcripts, which is listed on the left-hand side of the page.  Click on view the status of all my transcript requests.  The student will see the school name, the date the transcript was requested, and the date the transcript was sent.  Additionally, there is a confirmation code that the student can use, when contacting the school.  Keep in mind that while the eDoc process is more reliable, it takes longer to process.  Many schools have stated that it can take 14 business days to process eDocs.

SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2017-2018 SAT and ACT test dates.  Pay attention to the registration deadlines.

Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.  Both of these tests are college entrance exams.  Schools will accept these tests equally.  It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT.  This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other.  Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student.  At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free.  If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent.  It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools.  Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.

Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.  Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year).  Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers.  If a student were to take advantage of all the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500.  It is well worth the time to complete aapplication to see if you qualify.

Fee Waivers are now available in the BRACE office for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

On Campus Events:  College visits are open to juniors and seniors.~ All students must have a college visit pass to attend.~ The student must sign up through Eventbrite (
http://www.eventbrite.com/o/brigitte-lynn-8407916290) to get a college visit pass/ticket.~ Space is limited.~  Students must have their teacher's permission to attend. ~ It is between the teacher and the student whether it is appropriate for the student to miss class time to attend the college visit ~ Students should check Eventbrite often as visits are constantly being added.

2018 Black History Month Student Contests and Educator Awards

Here is information about the 2018 Black History Month student contests and educator awards, which will be centered around the theme, “A Celebration of Innovative African-American Leaders.”

Each February, as Florida celebrates Black History Month, many instructors incorporate into their lesson plans information about the significant contributions that African Americans have made to our great state. Once again, Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott have invited all Florida students to participate in the Black History Month art and essay contests. Students in grades K-3 have a chance to win a cash prize by submitting artwork and students in grades 4-12 can earn a four-year Florida Prepaid Scholarship through the essay contest.

These prizes could transform the lives of a student.  We encourage all of our students to take full advantage of this opportunity to enhance their appreciation for African American History and prepare financially for their own future education aspirations.

Additionally, students, parents, teachers and principals are invited to nominate full-time educators in elementary, middle and high schools for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.

The deadline for all submissions is March 2, 2018.

To learn more about Florida’s Black History Month celebration and contests, visit www.floridablackhistory.com.

CareDox-Parent Rollout:

Broward County Public Schools is excited to announce that we have entered into a Board approved agreement with a software company called CareDox.

CareDox provides a health documentation platform to be utilized by healthcare staff working in the school health rooms. The intent is to streamline clinic operations and to enhance communication with parents. CareDox is both HIPPA and FERPA compliant and has been reviewed by our District Privacy Officer, Risk Management and District Legal Counsel.

You will be relieved to know that your school staff will not be responsible for any monitoring or documenting in CareDox.

For the past two years we have had ongoing training for the healthcare personnel working in the school health rooms. CareDox is currently being used by many school health staff. This year we are trying to increase parent involvement by requesting that parents create CareDox accounts. The idea is that the healthcare personnel working in the clinic will be able to communicate with parents via the CareDox platform concerning clinic visits and  other health related occurrences. This by no means replaces the need for phone contact during emergencies.

The process is as follows:

  • Parents receive an email invitation from CareDox which allows them to create CareDox accounts via a computer or mobile device.
  • The information is stored securely and privately within the CareDox platform and automatically sent to the school healthcare personnel staffing the school health room for review.
  • If a student whose parent(s) has a CareDox account visits the clinic, the healthcare personnel is able to generate an email to the parent informing them of the student visit.
  • This does not negate the need for phone calls to parents for urgent situations.
  • Also, if there are any changes in the student's medical information outside of school hours, the parent is able to communicate that information to the healthcare personnel.

This email is to inform you that on January 11, 2018, you may receive the email invitation from CareDox.

NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELOR WEEK:

Last week’s special week provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

As we all have experienced, school counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; focus on positive ways to enhance students' social/personal, educational and career development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

Professional school counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in guidance and counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them integral to student success.
