Happy Earth Day McFatter Family,

Only one week has passed, yet Spring Break 2017 seems like a distant memory. We are back in full swing with a ton to still learn in the home stretch of this 2017-2018 school year. Seniors had a meeting on Monday where they received graduation updates and pulled an “all nighter” at Grad Bash in the Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure parks on Friday… They are now getting ready for the next big this of senior year – Prom Attire shopping!

Friday night was also a big night for our Relay for Life team as many volunteers walked to show their support for the American Cancer Society at the event held in Plantation’s Central Park.  A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in any way with Relay for Life. Pictures will be available on our social media.

Tuesday begins a full month of extensive testing through FSA, EOC, and AP testing, along with Senior Technical program Exhibitions. Please refer to all of the messages related to them below for more information. It is very important that students are present on time on the assigned day for each relevant task.

Also next week, I want to wish the students who will be competing this week at SkillsUSA competition at the state level great success. I look forward to reporting our successes in this amazing industry related opportunity to shine. We have nine high school and eight post-secondary students advancing from the REGIONAL to the STATE level of competition this week.

I wish you all a productive week.

Take care,

Lillie Henry

Magnet Coordinator

Family Connection - Last school year, the School Board of Broward County purchased a program called Family Connection (it is sometimes referred to as Naviance).  This is wonderful resource that has a plethora of information applicable to all grade levels 6 - 12.  There are interest inventories, college search/match, transcript request, scholarship match/databases, etc.   We have given assignments to all of our students to get them familiar with the program.  I highly encourage all students and families to use this program as much as possible.  If the school board does not feel that they are getting the appropriate benefit from the program, it is possible for us to lose it.  Attached is a guide to explain how to get started.

FAFSA - FREE Application for Federal Student Aid

Seniors - be sure to check with the schools that you are applying to, aall schools can have different FAFSA priority deadlines.  After you have completed your FAFSA you should wait 3 - 5 days for it to process.  Then you should go back in to your FAFSA account and check you Student Aid Report (SAR).

*** The district is trying to keep track of how many seniors complete the FAFSA.  Please let me know if you have already completed your FAFSA and received your student aid report (SAR). ***

Raise.me - Did you know you could earn a scholarship for every time you got a good grade in high school?… you can also earn money for playing sports, volunteering in the community, participating in school clubs, being a leader and even for those PSAT scores you just received!  On Raise.me you can earn these micro-scholarships towards over 200 colleges including UF, UCF, FIU and FGCU for everything you’ve done throughout high school, you can even put in your grades and activities from the 9th grade!  Now is the time to get started before the college deadlines pass, so let’s have you earn your first micro-scholarship. Create your own Raise.me account. It’s free for you and you can earn money for doing everything you’re already doing!

SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2016-2017 SAT and ACT test dates.  Pay attention to the registration deadlines.

Fee Waivers are now available for juniors who are on free or reduced lunch.

Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.  Both of these test are college entrance exams.  Schools will accept these tests equally.  It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT.  This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other.  Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student.  At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free.  If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent.  It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools.  Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.

Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.  Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year).  Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers.  If a student were to take advantage of all of the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500.  It is well worth the time to complete aapplication to see if you qualify.

Fee Waivers are now available in the BRACE office for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

On Campus Events:  College visits are open to juniors and seniors.~ All students must have a college visit pass to attend.~ The student must sign up through Eventbrite (http://www.eventbrite.com/o/brigitte-lynn-8407916290) to get a college visit pass/ticket.~ Space is limited.~  Students must have their teacher's permission to attend. ~ It is between the teacher and the student whether it is appropriate for the student to miss class time to attend the college visit ~ Students should check Eventbrite often as visits are constantly being added.
