Welcome McFatter Family!

Congratulations to the McFatter Blood Drive Committee in their recognition this week at the End of Year Ceremony. With all BCPS High Schools participating, McFatter was awarded TWO trophies for the HIGHEST PERCENTAGE INCREASE in blood donations and HIGHEST PERCENTAGE PARTICIPATION. Our students and staff who donated not only brought us pride for McFatter, they were also able to make a tremendous difference for our community.

On Sunday, a bus load of high school and post-secondary students will be going to Pensacola to compete in the SkillsUSA Florida State Leadership Conference and Competition in various contests related to their technical programs. We wish them great success. Follow McFatter on Social Media for updates along the way.

As always, there is a lot more information below…

Take care,

Lillie Henry

I would like to congratulate McFatter's Blood Drive committee and all of the McFatter family for a successful year.  An end-of-year luncheon was held yesterday and McFatter won two awards: Highest Percentage Increase and Highest Percentage Participation.  Thank you to everyone who supported our drives.  As a county, over 8500 pints of blood were donated which helped to save over 25,000 lives.  This was especially helpful this year, as we had multiple events which impacted our community and required extra blood (Hurricane Irma, the Parkland shooting, and the FIU bridge collapse).  If you are already a donor, thank you and keep up the good work.  If you are not a donor, please consider donating in the future.  One simple act and an hour of your time can help save up to three lives.

Seniors - Every senior is required to complete the Broward Graduation Survey on Naviance/Family Connection.  Students will need to indicate the school they will be attending and they will need to check off the send transcript button.  Only seniors who complete the survey will receive their caps & gowns and tickets for graduation.  The survey is found on Naviance under the About Me tab.  See attached document/Powerpoint for detailed instructions.

*Students cannot make corrections once they have submitted their survey.  If you have any additions or corrections after you have completed your survey, you can email Ms. Lynn with the information and she can correct it for you.

The McFatter Foundation Scholarship is now available.  It can be found on out MTC website.  It's in the Students/Alumni menu on the "Scholarship Applications" sub menu.  The direct link is:http://www.mcfattertechnicalcollege.edu/scholarship-applications/. All applications must be typed and turned in no later than 12:00 p.m. on May 10, 2018.

As I have been speaking with seniors recently, I have realized that they have some misinformation.  I would like to clarify a couple of points.  Bright Futures is a dollar amount that is based on tuition to a Florida Public College or University.   It does not pay 100 % or 75 % of a private school's tuition.  The FAS and FMS awards may be used at the state (community) college level or at a public or private Florida based institution.  Since the FGVS must be used towards an Associate of Science or Applied Science degree, and 4-year universities do not offer Associate degrees, it can only be used at the state college level.  None of these awards can be used out of state.

2018 Graduation Information - I was recently aa graduation committee meeting following are a few points of interest.  1. The graduation will be held at the Broward Center for Performing Arts on May 31st @ 2:00 pm.  2.  Students will receive 6 tickets (at 2nd rehearsal on May 30th).  3.  Students must be present at rehearsals (and have purchased a graduation gown) in order to get their tickets.  Students are NOT allowed to sell their extra tickets.  4. Students will additionally receive one parking voucher (a $7 value). All other vehicles will be charged a $7 parking fee. 5.  Students must arrive one hour prior to graduation.  I will have more details and documents to share as we get closer to the date.

Juniors who qualify for and participate in the Free or Reduced Lunch program also qualify for fee waivers to take the SAT and ACT.  These fee waivers are ready for qualified students to pick up.

Our sister school, Sheridan Technical High School, is organizing an Ivy League college tour, which is scheduled for next November.  They are opening it up to McFatterAtlantic, and Pembroke Pines Charter Schools.  Check out the attached flyer for details.

FAFSA - Every year millions of dollars of grant money goes unused.  Aa way for our students to get the maximum amount of financial help, the district has tasked us with a FAFSA challenge.  To date we have 75 of our 141 seniors who have completed their FAFSA.  I urge our families to complete this FAFSA as soon as possible as many schools have priority deadlines.  Keep in mind that completing the FAFSA is opening up the opportunity for students to get money to help with their educational expenses.  The money that is offered could be free (grants and scholarships), borrowed (loans), or earned (work study).  Families can always say no to what is offered (in particular loans).  You don't know what you can get until you apply.

Transcripts - Some students are still confused over the transcripts request process.  All transcript requests need to be made through Family Connection (see attached document). For schools that use the Common College Application, in addition to their own application, students need to indicate how they are applying to the school.  If the student does not indicate this, we are unable to send transcripts to that school.  For Common App schools: the counselor will upload the student's transcripts as part of their counselor recommendation.  There are four schools in Florida: FSU, UF, FL Poly, New College, and FAU, that are using the SSAR (Self-reported Student Academic Record system).  They do not want transcripts until they ask for them, which is after the student has been offered admission.  All hard copy transcripts need to be picked up from Ms. Martin.

A student can check on the status of their transcript requests by going in to their family connection account.  Click on the Colleges tab.  Click on transcripts, which is listed on the left-hand side of the page.  Click on view the status of all my transcript requests.  The student will see the school name, the date the transcript was requested, and the date the transcript was sent.  Additionally, there is a confirmation code that the student can use, when contacting the school.  Keep in mind that while the eDoc process is more reliable, it takes longer to process.  Many schools have stated that it can take 14 business days to process eDocs.

SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2017-2018 SAT and ACT test dates.  Pay attention to the registration deadlines.

Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year.  Both of these tests are college entrance exams.  Schools will accept these tests equally.  It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT.  This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other.  Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student.  At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free.  If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent.  It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools.  Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.

Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.  Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year).  Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers.  If a student were to take advantage of all the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500.  It is well worth the time to complete aapplication to see if you qualify.

Fee Waivers are now available in the BRACE office for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

On Campus Events:  College visits are open to juniors and seniors.~ All students must have a college visit pass to attend.~ The student must sign up through Eventbrite (
http://www.eventbrite.com/o/brigitte-lynn-8407916290) to get a college visit pass/ticket.~ Space is limited.~  Students must have their teacher's permission to attend. ~ It is between the teacher and the student whether it is appropriate for the student to miss class time to attend the college visit ~ Students should check Eventbrite often as visits are constantly being added.

District Update on Food Deliveries:

The district has issued a directive that commercial food deliveries to students (such as food ordered from UberEats, or any restaurant that provides direct delivery) are no longer permitted on school campuses. Please advise your students that, per this district directive, such deliveries will no longer be accepted. Delivery drivers appearing at our gates will be turned away, and students who placed the orders will bear the financial responsibility for any such orders without compensation from the school or district. Students who are off campus and then return to campus for lunch (for example, adult or high school students at clinicals in the morning, or high school students who have dual enrollment classes off campus before lunch), will still be allowed to bring onto campus food they purchased off campus before returning to school.
