Answers to some frequently asked questions:
Many schools have a March 1st FAFSA priority deadline date. Check with your school and make sure that you meet their deadline even if you have to use estimated information.
It is time for seniors to begin completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It is best to complete the online application at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is based on parental income tax information until the student is 24 years old. Seniors who are planning on attending college starting in the fall of 2014 need to complete the 14-15 FAFSA using 2013 tax information. If you are planning on starting school in the summer, you will need to complete the 13-14 FASFA (using 2012's tax information) and the 14-15 FAFSA. It is best to use the IRS data retrieval tool which is available beginning in early February.
Some schools have FAFSA deadlines as early as Feb. 1st. It is difficult to complete your taxes prior to this date, so in order to meet the deadline you can estimate your income using your previous year's tax information. One of the questions asked is "Have you completed your taxes?" When you check "no, but I will" the schools know that this is an estimation. You will then need to go back and update your information after your taxes have been completed.
Following are a couple of free test prep websites.
PERT prep - Go to Broward.edu. Click on Student Resources, then click Testing center. When you click the PERT link it opens up to offer you a PERT study guide and practice test. They also have links to youtube tutorials. You can also register for a free 4 - week on line college foundations course.
March2Success -
www.march2success.comWebsite includes test prep for the ASVAB, SAT and ACT. They also offer help with high school math and verbal skills. There is a high school science hub to help with Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science. Additionally they offer a college readiness online course. There is a Spanish option for this website.
Attention Juniors - Many students choose to begin testing in January/February of their junior year.~ If you are a junior on free or reduced lunch please stop by my office as I have fee waivers ready for you.
Free and Reduced Lunch -~There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.~
Students are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year).~ Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers.~ If a student were to take advantage of all of the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500.~ It is well worth the time to complete an application to see if you qualify.
On Campus Events: ~ College visits are open to juniors and seniors.~ All students must have a college visit pass to attend.~ The student must sign up in the BRACE office in order to get a college visit pass.~ Space is often limited.~ Passes are assigned on a first come first come basis.~ It is between the teacher and the student whether it is appropriate for the student to miss class time to attend the college visit.~ Students should stop by the BRACE office often as visits are constantly being added.
