Hello everyone,
I want to apologize for the confusion regarding the Writing Test. As you see below, we had a date change from what I reported. Please note that the ninth and tenth grade students will be taking the test on March 3rd/4th. The eleventh graders did receive a “pardon” from the governor this week and will not be tested in ELA writing. If you want to read more, go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2015/02/18/florida-gov-scott-concedes-that-kids-are-over-tested-drops-11th-grade-standardized-exam/.
On Thursday, the Shape Club sponsored a field trip to Kabooms. We took a bus load of students to Kabooms as an early release field trip to fill the afternoon. I don’t know if the students enjoyed it more or the staff. It was a great opportunity for all of us to just enjoy the time together. Thank you to those who were there!
Please join us this Tuesday evening at 6pm for dinner and our final Parent Seminar for the school year. This week we will talk about opportunities you may not be aware of that are extended to McFatter students to build success. Please call Ms. Dixson at 754-321-5702 to reserve your seat by Monday, as we will be serving dinner. I hope to see you there!
There is much information below.
Take care,
Lillie Henry

News from PTSA:The PTSA will be sponsoring a basket to be auctioned off at the upcoming Broward Tech Centers Foundation fundraiser on March 12th. The theme of the PTSA basket this year is "Game Day Survival". We would appreciate any unused items that we could put in the basket ( i.e. snacks, gift cards to fast food places, bottle of wine, college and/or or professional team items etc. for those watching the game or things to entertain those NOT watching the game; books, games, bath products, gift cards for hair, nails, massage, etc. ) So clean out those closets! Re-gift those unwanted holiday presents and gift cards! Be creative! Please send in all items to Mrs. Romanski or contact Shirley Dickinson at shirll...@aol.com or Karen Johnson at ckmy3...@comcast.net to arrange for pick up. So far the PTSA has collected $80 in Pollo Tropical coupons, a hot air popcorn maker, a throw, jewelry, football shaped drinking glasses, UM shaped pasta, a Chinese checker game and assorted home spa items! We appreciate anything you can contribute! Thank you in advance for your support! Collection of items will continue through Friday, February 27th.
PTSA is happy to announce that it will again be sponsoring the PTSA Grant Request Program. The PTSA's Teacher and Club Grant Program supports student learning by helping meet the needs of teachers and students. The PTSA has allocated funds for grants for the 2014-2015 school year. Grants will fund unique or innovative programs or resources; collaborations between teachers; special project materials; classroom or club field trips and special events; and more. It does not fund items already in the school budget. Grant requests are open to both Teachers and Student Clubs; however the individual submitting the grant must be or become a registered PTSA member. Phase three of the grant program will run from February 9th, 2015 through April 24, 2015. All grants must be submitted no later than April 24th, 2015 to be considered for our third grant cycle. Grant decisions will be made up through April 27, 2015 and funds released shortly thereafter (date to be determined). Clubs and especially freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes are encouraged to apply! The grant request forms are attached to this newsletter as well as the PTSA membership application form.

We had a very successful Broward College Senior Application Day. Fifty-two seniors completed their applications with BC. These students took the first step. They need to make sure that they follow through with their application fee, residency documents, FAFSA, and Final transcript (showing that they have graduated high school).
New information to share:
Important Financial Aid Information:
It is now time for seniors and their families to be thinking about financial aid to help pay for college/university. In December, I had the majority of the seniors complete the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) which is the Bright Futures authorization, as well as, application for state grants and scholarships. In addition to the FFAA, seniors should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). I always emphasize that it is a free application and it is based on federal income tax information. The official FAFSA website is http://www.FAFSA.ed.gov. All seniors are encouraged to complete a FAFSA. If you don't complete the FAFSA you will never know if you could qualify for federal or school based aid. It is always best to have the opportunity for aid. You can always decide not to accept what is offered to you. A lot of seniors would like to complete this form as an independent student. However, the federal government expects that parents should educationally support their children until the age of 24. (There are a few exceptions to this rule which are listed on the FAFSA.) This does not mean that you actually have to financially support them. You may not have the ability to do so, or you may have made a family decision to have the student to support themselves. However they do need your income tax information in order to complete the application.
The 2015-16 FAFSA application opened up on January 1st. Colleges, universities, and financial aid professionals are advising families to complete their FAFSA as soon as possible, even if they have not yet completed their 2014 income tax return. You can complete the FAFSA application using 2013 taxes or W-2 information to calculate your estimated income. You will check off that you have not completed your taxes, but you will. After you have completed your taxes and they are in the IRS system, you will need to go back in to the FAFSA system to update your information. It is best to use the IRS data retrieval tool to update/enter your tax information. There are priority deadline dates that vary by school and state. They usually range between February 1st and March 15th. Be sure to check with your school for their priority date.
* I would advise all students to select that they are interested in federal work study. They can always choose not to accept the job.
This process can be quite confusing. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. You may also contact FAFSA, the financial aid department at your child's prospective school, Broward College (you do not have to be planning on attending BC), the Florida Department of Education, Office of Student Financial Assistance, or you may attend one of the many free financial aid workshops (BC, NSU, etc.) that will be available in the upcoming months.

Home - FAFSA on the Web - Federal Student Aid Apply now! Federal Student Aid has more than $150 billion available to help you pay for school. |
The Bright Futures Authorization (Florida Financial Aid Application - also known as the FFAA) application opened on Dec. 1st. Currently 118 of our 141 seniors have completed their authorization forms. All of these students received information on the FFAA, FAFSA, and Bright Futures Including a personalized synopsis of their unofficial evaluation as of Nov. 12th. There is one big glitch with the system. Many of the student test scores are not showing up on their Bright Futures evaluations. I have researched a little and found that some/most of the scores are on the student's Broward County record. The district is working on this and it should be rectified by the end of January.
Free
and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to
qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves.
Students are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their
junior and senior years (1 per test, per year). Additionally,
seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college
application fee waivers. If a student were to take advantage of all
of the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500. It is well
worth the time to complete an application to see if you qualify.
Juniors -
It is time for you to start registering for the SAT and/or ACT. Fee
waivers are now available for all juniors who are free or reduced lunch
eligible. Please stop by my office to get your waivers.
On Campus Events: College

After thoroughly testing this process and finalizing the documentation we are now set to launch Student Advantage on Tuesday, February 17th.
Microsoft has provided flyers that you will be receiving shortly to help promote Student Advantage at your school. You will also find, attached to this email, digital copies of the flyer in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Creole. These flyers should be distributed starting on February 17th. In addition, Information & Technology has also set up ParentLink calls that will go out on February 17th and the Broward Schools Homepage will be promoting Student Advantage starting on that date as well. All families will be directed to a Broward Schools website that will help guide them through the process of obtaining the software.
