Current officer, Stacy Casson, has thrown in her hat for the job of President and Wendy Aguiar for Secretary. Sarena Shaw would like to stay on as Student Representative. We are hoping Janisa Tineo will as well.

News from Ms. Lynn, BRACE Advisor (Multiple attachments):
Please call (754)321-5805 with any questions you may have regarding BRACE News.
Seniors - Every senior is required to complete the Broward Graduation Survey on Naviance/Family Connection. Students will need to indicate the school they will be attending, and they will need to check off the send transcript button. Only seniors who complete the survey will receive their caps & gowns and tickets for graduation. The survey is found on Naviance under the About Me tab. See attached document/Powerpoint for detailed instructions.
*Students cannot make corrections once they have submitted their survey. If you have any additions or corrections after you have completed your survey, you can email Ms. Lynn with the information and she can correct it for you.
Senior Awards Night was held on Monday May 7th. It was a wonderful event. Thank you to everyone who attended. This is probably my most favorite event every year. It is a night for students, families and staff to celebrate our student's accomplishments. We were able to recognize 129 students in one way or another. Out of our class of 141 students, 119 received gold cords, 57 silver cords, 49 medals of Biliteracy, 32 NHS stoles. Many students were recognized for outstanding performance in a program area and for their scholarships (which include 87 students who qualify for one of the Bright Futures scholarships).
I did not have this information in time for senior awards, but... Congratulations to Gabriela Alor, George Cunningham, Linda Garay, Ryanna Juste, and Cristian Sordo who were awarded the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation Scholarship. This is a $1,000 scholarship that is renewable for up to four years. Great Job!
SAT and ACT Testing is coming to a close for the 2017-2018 school year. There is still time to register for the June SAT and ACT, but there is a late fee. You can still register for the July ACT with no late fee. See attached document for details. * I still have many juniors who have not picked up their fee waivers.
As I have been speaking with seniors recently, I have realized that they have some misinformation. I would like to clarify a couple of points. Bright Futures is a dollar amount that is based on tuition to a Florida Public College or University. It does not pay 100 % or 75 % of a private school's tuition. The FAS and FMS awards may be used at the state (community) college level or at a public or private Florida based institution. Since the FGVS must be used towards an Associate of Science or Applied Science degree, and 4-year universities do not offer Associate degrees, it can only be used at the state college level. None of these awards can be used out of state.
2018 Graduation Information - I was recently at a graduation committee meeting following are a few points of interest: 1. The graduation will be held at the Broward Center for Performing Arts on May 31st @ 2:00 pm. 2. Students will receive 6 tickets (at 2nd rehearsal on May 30th). 3. Students must be present at rehearsals (and have purchased a graduation gown) in order to get their tickets. Students are NOT allowed to sell their extra tickets. 4. Students will additionally receive one parking voucher (a $7 value). All other vehicles will be charged a $7 parking fee. 5. Students must arrive one hour prior to graduation. I will have more details and documents to share as we get closer to the date.
Juniors who qualify for and participate in the Free or Reduced Lunch program also qualify for fee waivers to take the SAT and ACT. These fee waivers are ready for qualified students to pick up.
Our sister school, Sheridan Technical High School, is organizing an Ivy League college tour, which is scheduled for next November. They are opening it up to McFatter, Atlantic, and Pembroke Pines Charter Schools. Check out the attached flyer for details.
FAFSA - Every year millions of dollars of grant money goes unused. As a way for our students to get the maximum amount of financial help, the district has tasked us with a FAFSA challenge. To date we have 75 of our 141 seniors who have completed their FAFSA. I urge our families to complete this FAFSA as soon as possible as many schools have priority deadlines. Keep in mind that completing the FAFSA is opening up the opportunity for students to get money to help with their educational expenses. The money that is offered could be free (grants and scholarships), borrowed (loans), or earned (work study). Families can always say no to what is offered (in particular loans). You don't know what you can get until you apply.
Transcripts - Some students are still confused over the transcripts request process. All transcript requests need to be made through Family Connection (see attached document). For schools that use the Common College Application, in addition to their own application, students need to indicate how they are applying to the school. If the student does not indicate this, we are unable to send transcripts to that school. For Common App schools: the counselor will upload the student's transcripts as part of their counselor recommendation. There are four schools in Florida: FSU, UF, FL Poly, New College, and FAU, that are using the SSAR (Self-reported Student Academic Record system). They do not want transcripts until they ask for them, which is after the student has been offered admission. All hard copy transcripts need to be picked up from Ms. Martin.
A student can check on the status of their transcript requests by going in to their family connection account. Click on the Colleges tab. Click on transcripts, which is listed on the left-hand side of the page. Click on view the status of all my transcript requests. The student will see the school name, the date the transcript was requested, and the date the transcript was sent. Additionally, there is a confirmation code that the student can use, when contacting the school. Keep in mind that while the eDoc process is more reliable, it takes longer to process. Many schools have stated that it can take 14 business days to process eDocs.
SAT & ACT Test schedules - Please see attached flyer for the 2017-2018 SAT and ACT test dates. Pay attention to the registration deadlines.
Traditionally students take the SAT and or ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year and a second time during the fall of their senior year. Both of these tests are college entrance exams. Schools will accept these tests equally. It is recommended that students take both the SAT and ACT. This way they will be able to determine if they have a strength on one test over the other. Keep in mind that most schools look at the scores that are most favorable to the student. At the time of registration, students are able to send their scores to 4 schools for free. If students wait until after testing to send these scores, they will have to pay $12.00 to have their scores sent. It is the student’s responsibility to have their scores sent to the various schools. Schools will only accept official score reports which are sent directly from these testing agencies.
Free and Reduced Lunch - There are many benefits to qualifying for free or reduced lunch, other than the meals themselves. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible to receive SAT and ACT fee waivers for both their junior and senior years (1 per test, per year). Additionally, seniors who have taken a test using a fee waiver are able to receive college application fee waivers. If a student were to take advantage of all the fee waiver offers, they could save over $500. It is well worth the time to complete an application to see if you qualify.
Fee
Waivers are now available
in the BRACE office for students who qualify for free or reduced
lunch.

Nurse Appreciation and CW Teacher Feature
The local CW station does a weekly "Super Teacher Feature" segment, and McFatter was fortunate enough to have our teacher featured, during Teacher Appreciation Week.
Since last week was *also* Nurse Appreciation Week, it's especially appropriate that our featured teacher is nursing instructor Karen Smith. Every year it bothers me that Nurse Appreciation and Teacher Appreciation are the same week... they each deserve their own separate weeks! ... but I'm grateful for the opportunity to say THANK YOU not only to our own school nurse, but to our incredible nursing instructors who are both Nurses and Teachers - double the appreciation for all that you do!
Here's the CW segment now airing. It's a great segment (and yes, we know they called us "Center" instead of "College"). Kudos to Karen and her students. Enjoy!
