Eco Vision-Eco Friend at Kodapadavu in Batwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada is one of the many units manufacturing disposable plates.MANGALURU: Tall areca palms swaying in the breeze give the coastline of Dakshina Kannada its fabled beauty but farmers in the region use every part of this native species to augment their income. Enterprising locals have set up manufacturing units to turn the dry leaves of the areca palm (betel nut) tree into eco-friendly plates, which have buyers across the world.
The huge palm fronds, or leaves, that drop to the ground every few weeks are gathered assiduously by farmers in Dakshina Kannada, Kasaragod, Shivamogga, Bhadravathi and Chikkamagaluru.
Earlier, the leaves would be burned or turned into compost but they're now supplied to the small area leaf plate making units that have sprung up in the district.

Rajaram CG Balipaguli, who set up the factory in 1994, says he exports two to three containers of 22 types of areca bioplates every month to Australia, Switzerland, Europe, Russia and the Gulf countries. A container has about three to four lakh plates.
At the f a c t o r y, the areca palm leaves are washed, cleaned and sterilized using ultraviolet rays to prevent fungal attacks. A gas-operated plate-making machine heat presses the leaf into the required shape. The plates are graded and the best ones are exported.
Balipaguli says he employs more than 100 people in his factory and buys areca leaves from more than 1,500 locals.

The disposable plates and bowls are an alternative to plastic and paper plates. The products are natural, compostable and biodegradable yet look stylish. The demand is high within the country too.

Well done Rajaram Balipaguli. If these can be done with other foliage too it would reduce the burning of leaves carried out all over DK district and also give additional income to the leaf collectors. Kudos
