I just checked my matches on Family Finder.

Ann McElhaney and I are descendants of Sampson McCown and Margaret Telford-She and I match.
Sampson was a son of Alexander McCown d 1802 Chester SC   Ann is listed as my 4th Cousin.

Recently Heidi Marie Chadwick's results came in. She matches David Ray Harbour who also matches me. Both of them descend from Mary McCown daughter of Alexander McCown d 1802 who married William Nutt. David is listed as my 5th Cousin and Heidi as my 4th Cousin.

On the basic search on my personal  page, Ann did not show as a match to David nor Heidi. I lowered the criteria and tried the test again and they did show a distant relationship.
Heidi and David showed as being related.

It would be nice to have more McCowns test in the Family Finder test. Notice none of us currently have the McCown surname. In fact, I am the only one with the McCown in my real recent ancestry-my mother was a McCown. With the rest of them McCown was several generations back.

Mic,

My grandmother was a McCown. Francis & Margaret Patterson McCown, James & Jane (maybe Patton) McCown, Francis and Mary Swinney McCown, William & Mary Vaughn McCown, William O. & Mattie Miller McCown, Emma McCown & Rett Stuart.

I have tested with FTDNA (Y-DNA Stewart Surname Project – Kit #14577), AncestryDNA, and 23andMe.

I do not think there has been a proven link between your Sampson and my Francis (about 1710, Ireland / before 1761, Augusta, VA). I know some descendants of Francis participated in the FTDNA Y-DNA McCown Surname Project.

I’m willing to compare with any McCowns in either of these.

Funny you should bring up Sampson.

I'm sponsoring a 111 marker test for the only Sampson kit in the project( that I'm aware of ) to see if he's more closely related to Francis or Alexander->George since I now have a way to distinguish between  the two lines at 111 markers.

I'm still looking for volunteers to test their Y-DNA from all of the other sons of Alexander.  Please contact me offline if you're interested in participating in the study.  I'll be happy to answer any and all questions about McCown DNA.

Hi Chris:

If you take the Family Finder test-you will match or not match anyone in the database descended from a McCown in your own family line.
The test usually measures back 6-8 generatons Occaisionally it may go further back but it usually is very remotely back.

I have not heard of others in my McCown line taking the Family Finder. If there are others, they either are not matching me or they have not listed McCown in their surname list.
I was matching Ann McElhaney but she apparently does not show as a match to Heidi and David-at least on my personal page.
Since I matched all three of them I was able to manipulate a comparison of all three by lowering the measurement criteria to make Ann show against Heidi and David on an excel chart.

Family Finder is autosomal DNA.
You inherit 50% from your father and 50% from your mother. That is "of" your father and mother's 100% which they randomly received from their parents and generations before them.
The 50% from each parent is random on what you inherit.
Your siblings also inherit (randomly) from each of your parents.
Both you and your sibling will randomly inherit different 50% from each parent.

Your child will randomly receive 50% of the DNA you got from each of  your parents.

So, think of it this way:
You got 50 % of your autosomal from each of your parents
25% from your grandparents
12.5% from your great grandparents
6.25% from your Great Great grandparents
3.125%  from your Great Great Great grandparents
Down to where there is almost nothing being inherited from the earlier generations.

Hi Chris:

Thanks for sponsoring the Sampson 111 kit.
That is y-dna and is only for males.

Where Ann, Heidi and David and I are matching is on the Family Finder autosomal DNA test which covers ALL one's lines back 5-8 generations.

I had my Dad take the family finder many moons ago.

We don't match since( like you've pointed out bellow ) it was too many generations ago.
