Choosing Couples Therapy as a Career

Dear Friend,

I am sure you are aware of a recent surge in the divorce rate in our country, shaking the very roots of our family system.  Being counsellors and psychotherapists, it is essential for us to sit up, think and find out ways and means of dealing with them.

In the West, thanks to the prevalent rates of divorce, there has been a proportional growth in the field of couples therapy. A large body of knowledge has developed assigning couples therapy a distinct of branch of psychotherapy.

How do I consider couples therapy? It is a task of balancing two opposing personalities nonjudgmentally and without hurting either of them. It is as fascinating as it is difficult! I have been to US for this purpose, studied a 9-month course in couples therapy accredited by the American Psychological Association, and participated in the world’s largest Couples Therapy Conference and workshops. I have been in touch with the most couples therapists and their work.

With this knowledge I have formulated a comprehensive Couples Therapy Project (CTP) to suit our country’s requirements (see attachment CT Project Flow Chart.pdf ).

As a part of CTP I have undertaken a ground breaking work in Couples Therapy. It consists of the following:

1)      I am in touch with the judiciary system to enforce couples therapy–not just counselling–by a trained couples therapist before the case is accepted for divorce.

2)      I am formulating a one-year Couples Therapy Course at post-graduate level. This will have a recognition from RCI and the individuals who successfully complete the course will be eligible to get practice license.

3)      I have collected sufficient study material in the form of books, audios and DVDs from abroad. This could be used to prepare a syllabus for a couples therapy course.

4)      I am planning to organise a Body of country’s Couples Therapists, who will, after having undergone adequate training obtained license, provide a supervised training to the trainees in order to enable them for clinical practice.

5)      I have a far vision to collaborate at global level and get accreditation by the American Psychological Association.

As a part of the CTP, I had called for a meeting on 25th September 2011 in which some of you have actively participated and given an idea of how you could be involved in the CTP. In furtherance, I have planned another meeting on Sunday, 17th June 2012. The agenda will be:

  1. To form a Core Group take the movement forward.
  2. To form a Study Group to prepare a course syllabus.
  3. To plan for the future activities and programmes.

I would love to invite you to participate in this meeting and contribute your strengths and thus be part of this movement.
