Dear Balaji,

Need a small favour.Could you please give me few details regarding practicals in shimoga as i would be going next week.
1) where should i get down..at shimoga or shimoga town? (while train booking it gives these two options)
2)  As mytrain would reach shimoga early morning, do we get autos to commute?
3) How far is hotel from hospital and how safe is it to stay alone? Any idea about hotel charges?

It would be great if you could snatch out. Sometime to answer these queries.

Take care,

Regards,
Anu

Dear Anu,
Shimoga is a small town with all facilities like in Bangalore.  Autos and local buses are available.  By train you get two stations which are just a kilometer apart.  Shimoga old station and Shimoga town (new station).  From old station Manasa is approximately 4 kms.  From new station Manasa is around 2 kms.  Both ways walkable distance.  (popular land mark is GOPI CIRCLE / Shimoga Head Post Office). Overnight train from Bangalore reaches Shimoga early in the morning at 4.30 a.m.  Autos are available in plenty, but charge in Dollars during that time.
Regarding hotels, there are plenty of them around Manasa within 1 km radius.  Just 3 buildings away from Manasa is Hotel Navratna International (veg/nonveg - 08182-275255, 275266), further opposite the road you have Hotel Woodlands (pure veg - owner rajendra) walk a few steps ahead to Gopi Circle (behind Manasa) and look to the right you will see Hotel Mathura Paradise (pure veg - owner gopi - 08182-270873, 260255), also Ramakrishna lodge is a stone's throwaway at Gopi Circle.  People are cordial to show directions unlike in Bangalore.  Rates in these budget hotels vary from Rs 250/- for a single-bed room to Rs 1000/- for multi-bed/family room.  At all the above hotels single bed is Rs 250/- to Rs 300/-.
Slightly away, within a km radius is Gaurav Lodge, M G palace, and Royal Orchid (star hotel).  In 2 kms radius is Hotel Jewel Rock.  Royal Orchid and Jewel Rock rates are high starting at Rs 800/- per day.  On B-H Road which is also just within 1 km from Manasa are many hotels, not advisable to take.
Overall Mathura Paradise seems decent of all hotels with good room facilities, continuous hot water/bathroom attached/commode, TV, wardrobe, sofa, newspaper, and clean drinking water supply.  On the ground floor is the hotel where good food is available, meals start at Rs 40/-, and breakfast varieties are found.  Basement is the bakery, sweet stall, chaat stall, etc etc, just like you find in any shopping complex in Bangalore.  So overall Mathura Paradise is a busy place with people movement, so considered to be a better place near Manasa.  (Location:  Diagonally opposite to Shimoga Head Post Office).  Note:  Please take mosquito repellants as Shimoga has joint families of these flying tiny dinosaurs.
Regarding Practical Sessions, day 1 is introduction by Dr. Preethi and team followed by a brief session on how to take case history.  Later you will get two patients to take their case history (2 members per team), you will take one case history and your partner will take one case history, you need to conduct this on each patient for at least 40 minutes.  At noon will be discussion of the cases in library with Mr. Ganesh Rao.  Note:  As patients are given medications post lunch and will be drowsy, it would be wise to get case history before lunch, not to worry if your lunch is delayed by an hour or so - have good breakfast and go to classes.
Day 2 submit your day 1 assignment for correction.  team will be split to two.  one team will go to manasadhara (around 5 kms away) to perform the tests like PGIMS, MSS, morale scale, etc etc what all we have in our practical outline book (so be prepared on all tests before you go there, only one test you will be performing - you can choose your test and accordingly patient will be given)  before going to manasadhara take xerox copies of the test forms of the test that you will conduct from the practical outline book.  The other team will stay at Manasa Nursing home and do case history taking plus counseling and verbatim for 2 patients (same like day 1).  Post lunch session is discussion. (travel to manasadhara will be in the nursing school bus - free (ms veena will be at manasadhara to guide the team)
Day 3 is team reversal and same process as Day 2.  Post lunch session discussion and spend time to make sure you get xerox copies of tests of all your batchmates.  In all you should have 17 tests.
5 case history, 5 case history with counseling, 5 case history with inventories, and 2 verbatims. - as these are the ones you will write when in bangalore for the practical assignments and send via post to Manasa along with the 25 theory questions.
Lastly if you are going by bus, get down at shimoga bus stand and take the opposite BH Road, walk down 200 mts you will find Vinayaka Theater, take left to its compound, walk down 400 mts until you reach Gaurav Lodge, take right walk down 400 mts you will find Hotel Navratna, stand there and look to your left you will find Manasa Nursing home.  Simple and easy to locate as there will be at least 100 to 200 people outside on the road in front of Manasa and patients are in plenty.
Bus charge is Rs 220/-, night train is Rs 144/-, morning 6.30 train to shimoga is Rs 37/- unreserved reaches by 1 pm.
Weather @ Shimoga - daytime is too hot, evening time breeze cools down the city.  City closes by 9 pm maximum.
Last date for submitting Assignments is May 15th official.  But Dr. Preethi in certain mails has indicated it will be extended for students attending practical sessions late.
In case of any clarifications, please feel free to call me on (M) 9731981761 or (R) 080-41608421 (Vidyaranyapura, B'lore-97)
Regards and best wishes,
