Many of you will have heard of the Fisher family's plan to build a contemporary art museum in the Presidio to house their art collection (CAMP).  Their proposal is to build a 100,000 square foot modern glass and white stone building at the south end of the main parade ground, in the most historic part of San Francisco.  This area has previously been declared a National Historic Landmark District (NHLD).

The proposal has been embraced by the Presidio Trust and is being promoted by the Trust in a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the Main Post area of the Presidio.  This SEIS reverses the Trust's 2002 Management Plan which made an "unequivocal commitment to the protection of the NHLD status".  The National Park Service has stated publically that the proposed CAMP may endanger the NHLD status for the Main Post.

In addition to CAMP, other proposals for the Main Post will increase the annual number of visitors from a little more than 1.5 million to nearly 2.5 million. These extra million visitors will have to travel through our neighborhoods to reach the Presidio.

The Fisher family and the Trust are making extensive use of professional public relations to promote their plans.  A coalition of neighborhood organizations, historical associations and environmental groups has banded together to "SAVE THE PRESIDIO".  Please visit their web site at www.savethepresidio.org.   The coalition plans to use newspaper advertising and other public relations tools to ensure that the public hears both sides of the story.

The coalition is soliciting funds to pay for this effort.  The Board of the Marina Community Association does not believe it is appropriate to use members' dues for this purpose, but we strongly encourage our members who oppose the CAMP proposal to contribute personally.

You can do that by sending your check in any amount made payable to the "Marina Community Association", with "Presidio" in the memo space, and mailing it to:

                  Marina Community Association
                  1517 North Point #531
                  San Francisco, CA 94123

Your prompt attention would be appreciated.
