A fun activity for the Columbian Exchange is 'Food-For-All Learning
Baskets', Cards with various foods, animals, and plants that
originated in the different continents are attached to the basket
labeled with that continent. The baskets are placed on the table
where the continents would be. Students take turns choosing a card,
reading the message that tells the name, where it originated and how
it became used in the new continent. Card is moved into the new
basket. At the end a web of strings is left between the baskets like
the early trade routes the explorers used.

I have not done this activity yet, as I'm behind... but one activity
I've done in the past is to have a list of the different foods and
items that were traded on the board. Next, I have students divided up
into areas around the room, simulating the different continents
involved with the trade. I would have one student start and hold one
end of a piece of yarn, they would start what item from their area
they would be trading and then throw the ball of yarn to a person in a
different area. That person would catch it and repeat the process.
At the end, that yarn is criss-crossed all over the room. As students
are still holding the yarn, I tell them about the diseases that were
passed along, too. This is a great visual for students! It really
helps them see how diseases were passed along with the items traded.

Thanks for the info. I had to have a sub and I left this for her to
show. It made a great lesson, with good info, and she didn't have to
try to study up on the lesson to share it with the kids! Thanks!
