On board a ship to the colonies

Students often wonder about the space on board the ships heading to
the colonies. I had found an article on-line that gave dimensions of
the average space each person would have, including how much space
there would be for their belongings. I tape off this space on the
floor in my classroom so students can see how little room each person
had aboard during this journey which could last up to three months. I
also have them pick a few small items (that we have today) that they
would bring with them if they were to travel to the colonies.
