After completing lessons on the Events that led to the Revolutionary War, students read the book:
You Wouldn't Want to Be at the Boston Tea Party! by Peter Cook. This is a informational picture book with comic illustrations and has a real character (George Robert Twelves) who appears throughout the book and portrays the events leading to the Revolution.
Once we read the book each student pretended they were George and chose an event from the book. They wrote their historical fiction from his perspective, whether it was to tell the story or complete journal entries. Those stories were fantastic with intentional
craft (dialogue, snapshots, thoughtshots) that created a fantastic voice. This will definately be a part of my lesson plans for next year.
